Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘COCO’ is a 2017 3D amazing wonderful colourful computer-animated fantasy film produced by PIXAR Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures and based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich, and it is directed by Lee Unkrich and was co-directed by Adrian Molina. The concept for the animated film ‘COCO’ was inspired by the Mexican “Day of the Dead” holiday celebration.

Twelve-year-old Miguel [Anthony Gonzalez] lives in the village of Santa Cecilla in Mexico. Miguel’s passion is music but his family has banned it for several generations. Miguel’s great-great-grandfather chose a music career over life with the family, and the succeeding generations have never forgiven him. Miguel has a secret place where he practices his guitar while watching movies of his hero, the great Mexican singer/actor Ernesto de la Cruz [Benjamin Bratt].

As the “Day of the Dead” approaches, there is an indescribable excitement in the air. Everyone in the village is getting ready to honour their arriving loved ones with decorated home altars, candles, foods and beverages, and flowers. In Miguel’s home, pictures of three generations of ancestors are placed on the “Ofrenda” [Spanish for “offering”]. The top photograph, however is torn where the musician ancestor would have been.

Determined to compete in a music contest in the plaza, young Miguel decides to borrow the guitar kept in Ernesto de las Cruz’s tomb. Suddenly he finds himself transported to the land of the dead with his street dog named Dante. This place turns out to be a large metropolis, with amazing brightly lit homes. On the bridge from there to earth, he meets several generations of his ancestors. One of them promises to give him the blessing he needs to return to earth, but with the condition he gives up music. Miguel decides instead that he will find de la Cruz, whom he believes might be the missing musician from the photograph, and get his blessing instead.

During his journey, Miguel gets some help from a skeleton named Hector [Gael Garcia Bernal], who wants the boy to take his photograph to an “Ofrenda”  so that he can visit his relatives on earth. Unless he is remembered by them, he cannot travel on the “Day of the Dead.” And eventually, he will disappear forever. “Memory,” Miguel learns, is very important.

Other themes of this charming animated film are the importance of honouring those who have gone before us, acknowledging the afterlife, having a passion for life, and creating family solidarity through rituals.

Director Lee Unkrich hits all the right marks in this impressive animated feature with its all Hispanic cast, its celebration of the restorative power of music, its lavish creation of the land of the dead, and its simple emphasis on an old photograph as a key to a young and talented boy's future.

One scene is especially emotionally affecting — watch for it — when Miguel sings his great-great-grandfather’s song “Remember Me” to his great-grandmother Coco [Ana Ofelia Murguia].

PIXAR’s journey to the “Land of the Dead” was an ambitious undertaking, even for a studio that’s produced some of the best-animated films of the past 20 years. But animated film ‘COCO’ wonderfully explores familial themes, identity, and learning what it means to grow up in a world that isn’t perfect. Miguel’s trip is a representation of what it means to grow up and learn the truths about how life works outside the safe confines of home. Hector, Miguel and even the slobbery dog Dante are all characters you won’t ever forget.

In an era when young people are so easily seduced by celebrity, ‘COCO’ reveals the emptiness of such adulation, poignantly teaching children to preserve and respect the memory of their elders while reminding them that the source of true creativity is so often personal.

Simply put, this is a total sumptuous feast for the eyes, and will sure give the viewers some mesmerising images from start to finish. Black levels are equally rich and inky throughout, especially with opulent shadows that penetrate deep into the screen for a fantastic three-dimensional feel without sacrificing the tiniest of details. With spot-on contrast delivering crisp, brilliant whites throughout, the bones of the dead are immaculate and gleaming from start to finish especially with the 3D spectacular images, you get to view. Viewers can count the separate rocks making the cobblestone roads or the cracks in the buildings of the marketplace. So all in all, PIXAR Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures have brought you something totally unique and totally awe inspiring.

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – PIXAR Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures brings us another stunning 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, plus a bonus of a 5.1 DTS-HD High Resolution Surround Sound experience, but of course to hear the preferred audio, you have to go to the menu, because the disc defaults to the 5.1 DTS-HD High Resolution Surround Sound version automatically. But despite this, both audio experiences are really good, but I preferred the 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experiences, especially when you hear the chatter of the living visiting the marketplace or the voices of the dead walking the streets of the afterlife. During the two talent shows and the big sunrise concert at the end, the room is surrounded with the cheers, applause of the crowds and eventually the boos from the crowd, that displays really excellent directionality ambience of sounds and will fully immerse the viewer. Action sequences come with superb panning effects, as noises discretely travel from one speaker to the next, creating an awesome 360 deg. sound field experience. The excellent composed film music score and the brilliant song selections, display a great deal of warmth and fidelity as each pluck of the guitar string can be heard and every high-pitched vocal note can be appreciated. Amid the fantastic festivities, vocals are always maintain with priority with the front speakers and are always intelligible, providing us to hear the voice cast’s each line spoken and especially their inflection, that have a very emotional depth that will bring tears to anyone's eyes. So all in all, PIXAR Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures have brought you something really special to experience.
