Andrew's Blu-ray Review: ‘FROZEN II’ [2019] is full of big emotions and boisterous musical numbers, and like its predecessor ‘Frozen,’ is an animated film designed to bowl you over and a mission it accomplishes. Anna [Kristen Bell] and Elsa [Idina Menzel], find their sisterly bond tested when a mysterious new presence enters their kingdom, but although the storytelling sometimes sags, this is an animated film with plenty on its mind and how societies have to reconcile with an imperfect past, and how individuals sometimes must choose between unenviable options for their future. An air of wistfulness imbues the proceedings, building to a resonant climax that’s hard to resist, despite some legitimate reservations about this uneven sequel.

‘FROZEN II’ begins when Elsa hears strange music from beyond Arendelle, and goes on a quest with her sister Anna, and their magical snowman Olaf [Josh Gad] and Anna’s boyfriend Kristoff [Jonathan Groff] go off to find its source. The journey will not only reveal a surprise about Arendelle’s history but also shed new light on Elsa and Anna’s deceased parents.

Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee return for ‘FROZEN II’ and as with the first film, this is a gorgeously animated fantasy-adventure that is packed with songs courtesy of Oscar-winners Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The new songs in the animated film tend to be belters, conveying demonstrative sentiments through unsubtle arrangements and super-sized hooks. That flamboyant approach becomes formulaic, but when the song is witty, especially Olaf’s anxiety about growing up in “When I Am Older” or genuinely moving with Anna’s self-motivating ballad “The Next Right Thing,” ‘FROZEN II’ has a winning old-school showmanship.

Less successful are the twists and turns of ‘FROZEN II’ particular story, as Elsa and Anna encounter unexpected new individuals and cultures that hold clues to the fate of the entire kingdom. In general, ‘FROZEN II’ plot seems to matter less than the opportunity to see these two sisters together, trying to make up for the time they lost when Anna’s memory of Elsa’s powers was erased.

‘FROZEN II’ is a somewhat more sombre affair, exploring the characters’ worries that the happiness they share may be fleeting. Elsa and Anna will discover that everything they’ve been told about Arendelle isn’t necessarily true, forcing them to make difficult choices that could jeopardise their kingdom but, ultimately, might be the moral thing to do. And although they’ve grown closer since ‘Frozen’ and the sisters come to understand that there are fundamental differences between them and not simply the fact that Elsa has magical abilities and Anna does not.

There’s also a surprising incoherence when it comes to the magical logic and “rules” of the animated film, with the enchanted forest’s all-important elemental spirits and their motivations never really explained properly while also overlapping in a confused way with an entirely different second quest for Elsa towards the film’s end, which does, to be fair, boast some of the animated film’s most arresting visual moments ever.

Anna and Elsa are obviously front and centre again alongside intriguing new and expanded characters played by the likes of Sterling K Brown and Evan Rachel Wood, while Olaf  and a massive highlight for the children has some new and inventive sequences to enjoy.

‘FROZEN II’ is packed with these fun, self-aware moments, with one highlight including a one-man recap of the first animated film ‘Frozen’ and of course starring Josh Gad’s Olaf,  of course and an icy reminder of Elsa’s “Let it Go” blowout, which seems to embarrass her years down the line. Also, it’s worth staying after the credits for one last gag, because even Disney animated films have to include post-credits stings now and again.

As with the original ‘Frozen,’ the sequel is a bit hit-or-miss in its comedy. Josh Gad remains an acquired taste as the adorable Olaf: the character is so aggressively positioned to be this franchise’s comic relief that his cutesy shtick can get tiresome. With ‘FROZEN II’ subplot concerning Kristoff’s disastrous attempts to propose to Anna strain for hilarity.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has delivered another winner and especially the terrific animated sequel in ‘FROZEN II’ in the totally breath taking “Real 3D.” The animated film makes some admirable turn of events and honestly has the plot and character growth done to perfection. Some of the songs do not quite jump out right away or have too many of them seeking the next big chart success. That’s not that they aren’t completely enjoyable, they just don’t feel instantly iconic like the songs in the original ‘Frozen’ and this first one was lightning in a bottle and even a sequel surpassing it would never be the phenomenon, it merely would keep the flame burning. ‘FROZEN II’ does do that and as a high compliment, it is as good as the original for the most part and a welcome addition to the continuing the story of Elsa and Anna. But the question I suspect all young ladies will be thinking is will there be a ‘FROZEN III,’ so watch this space. Please Note: Watch right to the very end of the End Credits, as you will get a nice little film bonus with Olaf the snowman.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – ‘FROZEN II’ Walt Disney Animation Studios presents this amazing “Real 3D” animated film with an astonishing 1080p image that really draws you into what you are viewing and also totally enhanced with an equally amazing 2.39:1 aspect ratio. ‘FROZEN II’ looks amazing in “Real 3D” computer-animated musical fantasy film and is fantastic, you can see the improvements in the technology of the previous animation since 2013, look out for the scenes with the water horse and the way that the water is beautifully animated all with a true feel of depth to make the most out of the “Real 3D” technology and gives you a spectacularly gorgeous, reference quality image of great depth, especially as it came directly from a digital source, so giving you a freshly-minted transfer is razor-sharp from beginning to end, exposing the tiniest detail in the clothing and the surrounding foliage, especially in the rock creatures. At the same time, facial complexions are stunning and impressive, revealing the finer wrinkles and freckles in several characters. Viewers can distinctly make out the fine lines in the stitching, the discrete hairs of characters and the individual ice crystals in the snow. On top of all that you get an amazing spot-on contrast, displaying resplendent whites everywhere and brilliantly radiant highlights. Black levels are equally exceptional and luxurious image in inky-rich shadows without sacrificing the finer aspects of the darkest corners while providing the action with an appreciable three-dimensional quality. Likewise, the palette is a feast for the eyes, bathing every scene with a sumptuously lush array of soft pastels and extravagantly vibrant primaries, especially an attractive selection of blues ranging from the deep indigos of the clothing and around the castle to the vivid arctic in Elsa's ice powers. So without doubt I can give this image presentation a massive top rated five star rating and will definitely give you a knock out image that will also impress any of your visitors who are longing to see ‘FROZEN II’ in the amazing “Real 3D” presentation.

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – ‘FROZEN II’ Walt Disney Animation Studios bring you this animated film in a glorious 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience. The audio displays excellent channel balances with impressive fluidly movement and plenty of background activity delivering an engaging sense of presence. Imaging, meanwhile, exhibits rich audio clarity and detailed definition. Imaging, meanwhile, exhibits rich clarity and detailed definition in the mid-range, and the dialogue is, at all times, very well-prioritized over the many loud action sequences. A potent and surprisingly robust low-end provides a weighty, notable impact to certain visuals, especially those moments involving the rock creatures. Various atmospherics subtly employ surrounds from time to time though it's not consistent enough to generate a convincing sound. With the amazing songs and music film score by Christophe Beck helps most of the leg work, the audio sound mix delivers a strong and effective presentation for the whole family. So again this definitely gets another top notch five star rating.
