Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: With the release of the Universal Pictures ‘TREMORS ANTHOLOGY’ five Blu-ray discs package, once again the relentless, man-eating creatures from below the ground are back to attack in one action-packed collection! Universal Pictures ‘TREMORS ANTHOLOGY’ five Blu-ray discs action-packed collection is the ultimate sci-fi adventure that will leave you on the edge of your seat and the race is on to overcome these slimy subterranean “Graboids” and the almighty epic battle of man vs. creature. So here is a short synopsis of each of the five films, and you will also witness who will win the epic battle between man and the “Graboid” creatures, that seem to at the time to outwit man with each film we view and will keep you guessing right to the very end of each film. So to find out what you can expect view with each of the five TREMORS films, here is a short synopsis of each of the five films that will inform you what you expect to see and witness with each film:

'TREMORS' [1990] Repairmen Val McKee [Kevin Bacon] and Earl Bassett [Fred Ward] are preparing to leave, as they are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of PERFECTION, Nevada, an isolated ex-mining settlement in the high desert east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, when their departure is halted by strange rumblings beneath the earth. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious grisly deaths and a concerned seismologist student Rhonda LeBeck [Finn Carter] studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple Burt Gummer [Michael Gross] and Heather Gummer [Reba McEntire], and with the other intrepid group of survivors, fight for their survival against the giant, worm-like monsters and with all these unlikely heroes, soon find themselves in an all-out mighty battle to survive.

'TREMORS 2: AFTERSHOCKS' [1995] After Earl Bassett [Fred Ward] spending all the reward money, has squandered his fortune on a failing ostrich ranch from his first encounter with the giant man-eating worms called the "Graboids." Earl Bassett is approached by Sr. Carlos Ortega [Marcelo Tubert], who informs him that the "Graboids” are killing his workers at his oil field in Sonora, Mexico, and agrees to hunt more of the deadly creatures at the Mexican oil refinery for $50,000 each. Earl Bassett initially declines, but Sr. Carlos Ortega's taxi driver, Grady Hoover [Christopher Gartin] who I felt was totally naïve, brain dead and most of all was totally annoying, to the point it was a shame one of the "Graboids” did not get a chance to swallow him whole, but despite this, convinces Earl Bassett to change his mind; and so the journey begins with both of them join in the hunt. Knowing that they cannot face the monsters alone, Earl Bassett recruits Burt Gummer [Michael Gross], another veteran of the incident in in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada, to supply the firepower. There is only one problem: The “Graboids” have now evolved to attack above ground. Teaming up with scientist Kate Reilly [Helen Shaver], the group attempt to track down and destroy the killer worms in the oil fields of Mexico. There is only one problem: The “Graboids” have now evolved to attack above ground. One annoying factor with this Blu-ray disc is that there are no special features.

'TREMORS 3: BACK TO PERFECTION' [2001] Legendary monster-killer Burt Gummer [Michael Gross] returns to face down a group of corrupt property developers to his hometown of the small desert town of PERFECTION, Nevada, scene of the original attacks by the worm creatures with razor teeth known as the “Graboids.” However, things soon go from bad to worse when a third mutated strain of the monstrous “Graboids” creatures attack again, only now they have split into the “Graboids Shriekers” and are a new mutation known as ass-blasters, which are propelled into flight by combustible flatulence and the monsters, makes its presence felt. So it is up to Burt Gummer and his new partner in crime naïve and slightly annoying  at first Jack Sawyer [Shawn Christian] who creates mock-attack tours for visiting tourists, but unfortunately one afternoon, during one of Jack Sawyer's tours, his assistant Buford [Billy Rieck] is eaten by an actual “Graboids Shriekers.” So in the end the new locals have to save their town of Perfection from destruction, with the help of legendary monster-killer Burt Gummer. Right at the end of the credits you get to read this very funny tongue in cheek statement that tells us, “No Graboids, Shriekers or their Mutations were harmed in the making of this motion picture.” Once again, this particular Blu-ray disc annoyingly has no special features.

'TREMORS 4: THE LEGEND BEGINS' [2004] Prim East Coast dandy Hiram Gummer [Michael Gross] arrives in the town of REJECTION, Nevada, to investigate a series of strange deaths at the silver mine he owns, where silver miners fall victim to an unseen monster predator. Hiram Gummer receives help from local innkeeper Christine Lord [Sara Botsford] and miner Juan Pedilla [Brent Roam]. But, when it turns out that it is fact the gigantic “Graboids Shriekers” killer worms that burrow underground are responsible for the miner’s deaths, so Hiram Gummer decides he had better call in an expert gunslinger called Black Hand Kelly [Billy Drago] to save the day, but unfortunately this turns out to be the wrong decision. At the end of this film, you get to see how the town of REJECTION finally becomes PERFECTION.

'TREMORS 5: BLOODLINES' [2015] Hardened survivalist Burt Gummer [Michael Gross] and his new sidekick Travis [Jamie Kennedy] are hired to track down an ass-blaster terrorizing Cradlestone Reserve near the Magaliesberg Mountains in South Africa and set out to hunt down a supposedly isolated subterranean monster in the South African wilderness. Meanwhile, at the Plover’s Lake Dig Site in the Gauteng Province, we find two palaeontologists celebrate after finding the fossilized remains of a gigantic “Graboids,” but they are attacked and eaten. Investigating the scene, Burt Gummer sees the fossil and realises that it is a different breed of “Graboids.” However, the hunters soon become the hunted when Burt Gummer and the rest of his crew, including wildlife reserve worker Travis Welker [Jamie Kennedy], discover what they are really up against and engage in battles with the aggressive creatures, and they soon discover an even more lethal creature and an all mighty battle fight for their survival against the giant, worm-like monsters and with all these unlikely heroes, soon find themselves in an all-out mighty battle to survive against this new lethal breed of monstrous “Graboids.”

Blu-ray Image Quality – Universal Pictures brings you this amazing TREMORS ANTHOLOGY, featuring an equally impressive 1080p image presentation. With all five films you get to also experience two types of equally impressive 1.85:1 and 1.78:1 aspect ratios. TREMOR 5 is the only one shown in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio. In all five films, the films were shot almost exclusively outdoors, where Arriflex Cameras captures some wonderful vista scenery and the detail in all five films is at the very high end of image quality. Colours are typically bright, with also very sharp images and are very dominant throughout all five films. As with this TREMORS ANTHOLOGY there are some awesome and outstanding scenes of top quality visual quality in these TREMORS franchise production.

Blu-ray Audio Quality – Universal Pictures presents us with this amazing TREMORS ANTHOLOGY with an amazing 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound experience is very good and quite impressive throughout the five films. The dialogue is crystal clear and centred on the front speaker very nicely and easy to understand. The noises of people screaming, shouting, rocks falling, and the monster aliens attacking the people and buildings are all loud and flow nicely, especially with some of the surround sounds. The composed film music is also brilliant with the dramatic scenes in the films and never drowns out any of the dialogue. Whenever the aliens pop out of the ground or inside the buildings, or when the gun shots go off, the bass rumbles and the speakers pack a powerful mighty punch. So all in all, the audio sound experience in all of the five films is a very solid sound presentation, and especially hearing the awesome sounds of those monstrous “Graboids,” but sadly in only the four films with 5.1 audio there is minimal surround sound experience, which was slightly disappointing, especially with the flying “Graboids.” One thing I am not very happy about is the fact that with ‘TREMORS 2’ it is only available as English: 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio and I suppose the executives felt this second TREMORS film was not going to be a big success compared to the original film, and so decided to skimp on the audio presentation of the film and short changed the public at large. But luckily with TREMORS 4 and TREMORS 5 you get a much more pronounced effective ambient surround sound effects, that really enhances the “Graboids” heading towards the people defending their ground against these monsters and you actually feel as though they are about to enter behind you, it is that realistic.

Blu-ray Special Features and Extras:

Special Feature: The Making of ‘TREMORS’ [1990] [480i] [1.33:1] [53:38] Here we get to view a retrospective feature documentary on the making of the creature cult favourite film ‘TREMORS’ [1990]. The Making of ‘TREMORS’ is an in-depth documentary video feature made by MCA Universal Home Video. It has the usual appearances of the film director, producers, cameramen, special effects and other crew members and some of the film's stars get to air their comments about featuring in the film. But the most interesting thing about this special in-depth documentary is how the monsters were made and filmed and goes into great detail in showing various aspects of the monster and how it was made and especially how it was operated by the skilled special effects team. Here we get to view 10 separate features, which consist of How It All Began . . .; Building Perfection; The Mechanical Effect, The Cast; Photography and Editing; The Creatures; The Minatures; The Cliff; The Ending and Creature Feature. As usual, you can either watch each feature separately or Play All. Contributors include: Ron Underwood [Director], Brent Maddock [Screenplay/Producer], Steve S. Wilson [Screenplay/Producer], Tom Woodruff, Jr. [Amalgamated Dynamics Inc.], Alec Gillis [Amalgamated Dynamics Inc.], Dennis Skotak [4-Ward Productions, Inc.] and Robert Skotak [4-Ward Productions, Inc.].

Special Feature: 'TREMORS' Featurette [1990] [480i] [1.33:1] [3:52] Here we get to view a promotional documentary to go with the inferior DVD release and we go behind-the-scenes documentary on filming ‘TREMORS,’ and Gale Anne Hurd, who also was involved with films like ‘The Terminator,’ ‘Aliens’ and ‘The Abyss’ and who was part of a group of producers who helped bring this film ‘TREMORS’ to fruition. It has the usual appearances of some of the film's stars who get to air their comments about featuring in the film and we also get to view some rare behind-the-scene filming. Contributors include: Kevin Bacon [Valentine McKee], Michael Gross [Burt Gummer], Reba McEntire [Heather Gummer] and Ron Underwood [Director].

Special Feature: Star Profile: Kevin Bacon [1990] [480i] [1.33:1] [2:56] This promotional video is the same people who produced ‘TREMORS’ Featurette, that also features rare behind-the-scene filming of ‘TREMORS.’ But the main bulk of this short feature is featuring Kevin Bacon and talks mainly about his character in the film and working with the cast and crew.

Special Feature: Star Profile: Michael Gross [1990] [480i] [1.33:1] [2:23] Here we have another short promotional video by the same people who produced ‘TREMORS’ Featurette, and this time it features Michael Gross who plays the character Burt Gummer, who works alongside his then-wife Heather Gummer [Reba McEntire] and talks about his character in the film and how naïve he was at the start of the film, but soon showed grit and determination in eventually destroying the Graboid with his arsenal of weapons and explosives.

Special Feature: Star Profile: Reba McEntire [1990] [480i] [1.33:1] [1:56] Here we have the third and final short promotional video by the same people who produced ‘TREMORS’ Featurette, and this time it features Reba McEntire who plays the character Heather Gummer, who works alongside her then-husband Michael Gross who plays the character Burt Gummer, but also shows Heather Gummer’s grit and determination in destroying the Graboid with their arsenal of weapons and explosives. Reba McEntire also talks about her first experience of being involved in making her film debut and how she found it a great deal of fun, and especially after shooting her first scene in the film.

Special Feature: Deleted and Extended Scenes [2015] [1080p] [1.78:1] [10:21] Here we get to view a typical random group of eight deleted and extended scenes from the film ‘TREMORS: BLOODLINES.’ But when you view them, you can understand why they ended up on the cutting room floor.

Special Feature: Outtakes [2015] [1080p] [1.78:1] [6:48] Once again we view a plethora of the typical portion of actors fluff their lines, missed cues, so called laughter and joking around. But in the end you wonder why they even bothered to include this in this Blu-ray disc, as none of it is at all very funny.

Special Feature: TREMORS 5: Behind The Bloodlines [2015] [1080p] [1.78:1] [8:10] Here we have a better than average in-depth promo reel for the film ‘TREMORS 5: BLOODLINES’ where we get interviews and a behind the scenes look at the filming of this TREMORS franchise, the characters, this particular production, and the themes of the story. We also get to hear from several of the cast and crew on their experience of working in South Africa, as well as experiencing the African wildlife and especially the American actors who would not have the same experience working in Los Angeles and especially Hollywood. Contributors include: Don Michael Paul [Director], Ogden Gavanski [Producer], Rea Rangaka [Baruti], Daniel Janks [Erich Van Wyck], Michael Gross [Burt Gummer], Brandon Auret [Johan Dreyer], Pearl Thusi [Dr. Nandi Monlabu], Sello Sebotsane [Thabu] and Jamie Kennedy [Travis B. Walker].

Universal Sneak Previews: Here we get to view two unmissable Blu-ray and DVD releases, which are as follows: R.L. Steine’s MONSTERVILLE: Cabinet of Souls [2015 [1080p] [1.78:1] [1:42] and R.L. Steine’s THE HAUNTING HOUR: Don’t Think About It [2007] [1080p] [1.78:1] [1:14].

Finally, TREMORS ANTHOLOGY is a brilliant way to indulge your fantasy craving for this TREMORS cult classic horror film franchise. With the film TREMORS, this was always one of my favourite films growing up, and still remains one of my all favourites today, especially starring the brilliant Fred Ward who is also a firm favourite actor of mine, and especially the main two characters, who are delightfully absurd, and the thrills make this a truly timeless cult classic, which of course started the trend to bring out more sequels. The audio and image quality is top notch and the extras are quite funny and well worth the watch. TREMORS 2 features a very bog standard 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, that is need of a surround soundtrack, especially with some of the hefty audio effects, especially with rumbling of the trucks, heavy gunfire, explosions, or splattering of the “Graboids” monsters. The dramatic composed music is well suited for this film, which of course is all heard via your front three speakers, as well as the good audio presence of the dialogue. TREMORS 3 is much more of an improvement over the previous film, and the first part of the film is back to the same type of scenario, and of course Michael Gross is back in action once again, fighting these monstrous “Graboids,” who are trying to outwit the people of PERFECTION. Considering the time-frame, the actors play off each other well and even the new characters sparkle alongside them and it is not hard feel some affinity towards all of the characters by now and credit to Michael Gross for constantly playing the character with such verve and vigour. The composed film music is pretty standard, but is helped along with all the massive amount of gunfire, massive amount of explosions, plus we do get some minor ambience of surround sound with the blowing of the wind and the scary sounds of the monstrous “Graboids,” and the dialogue is well placed and clean with the front three speakers. With the TREMORS 4 film, it now starts to get a much more interesting scenario and it is wonderfully packed with lots of laughs, and also with a touch of an outrageous B-monster style film horror genre and with hint of a much more western flavour and the results is really great. Michael Gross returns for this sequel, playing Burt Gummer's great-grandfather Hiram Gummer. The film is a "prequel" and it's very faithful to the original TREMORS film, and showing how it happened. The creature effects have been vastly improved from the previous TREMORS 2 and TREMORS 3 film and Jay Ferguson's composed film music is very interesting and very appropriate to the film's western atmosphere scenario and the surround sound effects have also been vastly improved. With this final TREMORS 5 franchise film, is a great deal of fun and is also very entertaining and of course this time we are now in South Africa and Michael Gross has definitely stepped up his game and really shows us his real character that has grown in stature and is a great deal of fun to watch, especially when it comes to killing those nasty monstrous “Graboids” and “Ass-Blasters” that have really evolved to be even more dangerous and devious. Also, what is really great about this particular film is that it is really well made, especially with the setting in South Africa that helps to make this film more interesting. Another bonus with this film is the really excellent video and audio presentations are both excellent, and especially the robust surround sounds that really keeps you on the edge of your seats with all of the speakers working overtime and the composed film music by Frederik Wiedmann is well suited for this film. So all in all this TREMORS ANTHOLOGY is the perfect package if you are a TREMORS fan like me and most of the films are really great, except for TREMORS 2, which I felt was a bit of a let-down and tried to cash in on the original TREMORS film, especially having Fred Ward back in action, but I feel this actor was let down by the Director and the screenwriter, but despite this, overall TREMORS ANTHOLOGY Blu-ray package is a really excellent purchase. Highly Recommended!
