FILM FACT: SAN BASE is a Canadian artist, and was born in Russia, but moved to the Ukraine and excelled as a programmer. SAN BASE invented the concept of Dynamic Painting by combining his two strengths – programmer’s skills and love of art. SAN BASE immigrated to Canada in the mid 1990’s and over the last decade he perfected the technology behind Dynamic Paintings. And now, brilliant results of his genius work can finally be discovered in galleries throughout the world. San Base Studio is an international contemporary art and design studio creating abstract, psychedelic and surrealistic digital art for TV and interior design applications. Canadian artist San Base is a pioneer of a new medium of art that utilizes the classical elements of painting, while harnessing the power of computer technology to bring two drastically different disciplines together. Dynamic Paintings are composed of abstract images in a state of perpetual transformation. The overall idea of the painting remains unchanged, while the computer introduces infinite variations. SAN BASE used to work out complex computer codes in various visual applications when he began to see a possibility of combining his long standing interest in art with sophisticated mathematical approaches, and thus employing new electronic media for his artistic creations. In 2002 SAN BASE devised his “Dynamic Painting” algorithm, which allowed him to place an art object on a computer screen and make it not static, but changing and transforming with time. Dynamic Painting technology uses powerful video cards to generate real-time images that rival those seen in conventional contemporary painting. Since 1996 SAN BASE now lives and works in Toronto.

The invention of Dynamic Painting are created by conceiving an idea, selecting basic colours, shapes and principles of development. Unlike a conventional painter, San Base has to think in many dimensions to properly design the evolution of his images. Using a wide array of techniques that have deep roots in the styles of conventional painting, San Base converts brush strokes into algorithms. These algorithms represent the "DNA" of the picture like the DNA of a living organism. With a slight mutation; the image algorithm can produce an infinite number of unique paintings. This "mutation" process can be slowly animated over time to produce a fluid motion within the element of a painting; producing a magnificent never-ending and never repeating show.
Dynamic Paintings is an innovation of art and science, and has added a new level of complexity and quality to digital generative art that has never been seen before. Unlike other generative art examples that follow few classical principles and require very little input from the artist, my paintings are truly my creation. I'm a strong believer that innovation is often born when several drastically different disciplines come together. As an experienced programmer and an artist I have an added edge.
SAN BASE says, with the Dynamic Paintings, I'm designing examples of digital generative art – an art that has been generated algorithmically by a computer system. There have been many attempts at producing generative art; the history of it goes back to the early days of computer development. Many of these works have used fractals and pretty much none of them accounted for more than just basic artistic principles. This is not the case for my Dynamic Paintings. I'm a strong believer that innovation is often born when several drastically different disciplines come together, and I think that being an experienced programmer and an artist gives me an edge.
Another big challenge with dynamic picture has been the inadequate computing power of personal computers to handle advanced algorithms that describe artistic principles of a computer generated painting. My technology uses powerful video cards to generate real-time images that rival most of the conventional contemporary paintings that cost thousands of dollars. This is not something that has been attempted before. Also, being able to generate images in real time enables me to set paintings in motion and create a new experience never seen before. The painting is always in the state of a perpetual transformation. It never repeats itself. Every time a new image is created, there is an opportunity for a peaceful receptivity and then the work disappears forever.
As they say, necessity is the mother of all inventions. When SAN BASE started painting over his old works, he noticed something peculiar about the way he was doing it. While painting over the old images, SAN BASE always subconsciously tried to select colours in such a way, that the latest work in progress would always harmonise with the old image being painted over. This phenomenon seemed intriguing to him, so he purposefully began transforming the same picture over and over again, achieving interesting results in the process. The paintings attained another dimension – the dimension of time. But the process itself was too laborious; the paints and canvas were far from being an ideal platform for implementing the newly discovered concept. It occurred to SAN BASE that a computer or TV screen would be a much better device in bringing pictures to life than a real canvas. This is where his computer engineering background came in handy. SAN BASE put the brushes aside and started developing a programme that could help him automate the image generation and transformation. Suddenly the new medium was born.
