Andrew's Blu-ray Review: Over the last twenty five years, John McClane [Bruce Willis] has become such an iconic part of the action-film landscape that it's hard to remember a time when he wasn't etched in our pop culture consciousness. Starting with 'DIE HARD,' and continuing through four other sequels, the character has proven to be one of the most durable in a very fickle genre. Aside from James Bond and Indiana Jones, there may be no other action movie hero who has lasted as long or remained as beloved by audiences around the world. John McClane redefined the boundaries of the action archetype; bringing warmth, humour, unpredictability, and an almost fanciful sense of masculine daring do to this film genre and here is a run-down of the synopsis of each film and they are as follows:

‘DIE HARD’ [1988] On Christmas Eve, New York cop John McClane [Bruce Willis] is visiting his estranged wife Holly Gennaro McClane [Bonnie Bedelia] in Los Angeles, where  she works. They are attending a party at Holly Gennaro McClane's high-rise office block when terrorists, led by the suave Hans Gruber [Alan Rickman], break in, taking everyone hostage. John McClane manages to evade capture; however, he sets out to rescue his wife and the other prisoners, especially as he dispatches the baddies with bullets and a certain earthy wit.

'DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER’ [1990] A year after his heroics in Los Angeles, detective John McClane [Bruce Willis] is mixed up in another terrorist plot, this time at Washington Dulles International Airport, where he is waiting for his wife Holly Gennaro McClane [Bonnie Bedelia]. That same night, South American politico and drug profiteer General Ramon Esperanza [Franco Nero] is arriving in U.S. custody. John McClaine takes action when a treasonous ex-colonel Colonel Stuart [William Sadler] seizes control of the airport, threatening to crash every inbound flight unless Ramon Esperanza is freed.

'DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE' [1995] Detective John McClane [Bruce Willis] is now divorced, alcoholic and jobless after getting fired for his reckless behaviour and bad attitude. He is called back into action, however, when a cryptic terrorist Simon Gruber [Jeremy Irons] takes New York City hostage in a lethal game of "Simon Says" and refuses to speak with anyone but John McClaine. Teaming up with a street-savvy electrician named Zeus Carver [Samuel L. Jackson], John McClane dashes through the city, trying to stay one step ahead of a murderous plot.

'DIE HARD 4.0: LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD' [2007] As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, veteran cop John McClane [Bruce Willis] carries out another routine assignment: bringing in a computer hacker Matthew 'Matt' Farrell [Justin Long] for questioning. Meanwhile, a tech-savvy villain named Thomas Gabriel [Timothy Olyphant] launches an attack on America's computer infrastructure. As chaos descends around him, John McClane must use old-fashioned methods to fight the high-tech threat and John McClane and his hacker friend Matthew 'Matt' Farrell has to stop the mastermind before it's too late.

'A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD' [2013] New York City cop John McClane [Bruce Willis] arrives in Moscow to track down his estranged son, Jack McClane [Jai Courtney]. John McClane thinks his son is a criminal, so it comes as a shock when he learns that Jack McClane is actually working undercover to protect Komarov [Sebastian Koch], a Russian government whistle-blower. With their own lives on the line, John McClane and Jack McClane must overcome their differences in order to get Komarov to safety and thwart a potentially disastrous crime in the Chernobyl region. With the Russian mafia snapping at their heels and time is running out, so John McClane and Jack McClane soon discovers that although their approaches may differ slightly, the end result is certainly an explosive ending. This Blu-ray Disc has both the Theatrical Cut and the Harder Extended Cut, which I prefer.

As a franchise, the five ‘DIE HARD’ films stands tall, especially in the character of John McClane [Bruce Willis] as the New York cop, found his best-ever role out of his acting career, and with a combination of brawn, brains, and especially derogatory or mocking sharp critical wit, and who created a whole new icon of the action film genre. Add to that we experience some of the most over the top-notch stunt sequences and effects of the action packed film genre you ever get to view. Some negative critics have claimed that the 'DIE HARD’ series has had its ups and downs, but in my opinion, the ‘DIE HARD’ franchise series has got to be the ultimate action packed film franchise ever, that is a total blast!

Blu-ray Image Quality – 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment brings you a totally brilliant DIE HARD COLLECTION with awesome 5 Blu-ray discs and here is a review of the image quality: The image quality ultimately depends upon the age of the film, especially the first three films, but mostly in reflection of all five films look really fantastic. Even ‘DIE HARD’ since its release in 1998, has been given a masterfully restored 1080p high-definition and has been given some effective reworking over previous Blu-ray ray disc releases, and the high-definition presentation finds this first film is now looking better than day it was released in the cinemas. There is a little left-over grain for the ‘DIE HARD’ first film and likely from the original negative, and the clarity overall on each of the Blu-ray discs are totally first-rate, but especially 'A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD' [2013] which is the ultimate viewing experience. Deep black levels, nice contrasts with no ghosting and relatively little grain. The image doesn't pop in the way that larger, splashier, and more modern films might; even the fourth film, filmed in a kind of monochromatic gun-metal grey, fails to leap from the screen. But overall, the high-definition image quality is very good. So all in all this DIE HARD COLLECTION is the ultimate Limited Edition SteelBook to own and you will be very well entertained and you will feel you have the ultimate DIE HARD COLLECTION of all 5 films. Please Note: Playback Region B/2: This will not play on most Blu-ray players sold in North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Learn more about Blu-ray region specifications.

Blu-ray Audio Quality – 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment presents you this brilliant DIE HARD COLLECTION with totally awesome 5 Blu-ray discs and here is a review of the image quality: The main 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track really helps you experience some really startling clarity, volume and base, and especially when it comes to the big dramatic gun-fight shootouts and especially with the awesome explosions across all five films will virtually fill your living room with the sounds like you are in a warzone. Simply by their nature, the first three films are a bit more subdued, breaking out now and again into a full-on action mode intermittently throughout the runtime of the films. The fourth film is a bit more bombastic and boasts the most effective and involving sound surround mix and largely because it's both bigger in scope and mixed with the modern multi-channel surround-sound set-up in mind. But if you want to experience some mind blowing audio experiences, then the final film 'A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD' is the ultimate film to hear some awesome sounds to give you a great workout with all your speakers, as they all get used with some spectacular surround sound effects, and makes you feel totally involved with the film and especially the awesome action you view throughout the film and all in all this is a 5 star surround sound experience. Collectively, the sounds you hear are brilliant and whether it be a simple dialogue sequence, or the tense moment walking across shattered glass or an all-out battle at the top of a towering building, these 5 films are a total winner.

Blu-ray Special Features and Extras:

DIE HARD Extras:

Audio Commentary by Director John McTiernan and Jackson DeGovia: The first has separate recordings of director John McTiernan and production designer Jackson DeGovia edited together. It's a fairly informative and technical commentary track on the overall production and some of the challenges that had to be overcome. The second is another interesting and revealing track with special effects supervisor Richard Edlund. Although there are many gaps of silence throughout, there is so much to learn from this particular audio commentary conversation.

Audio Commentary by Special Effects Supervisor Richard Edlund [Scene Specific]: Here Special Effects Supervisor Richard Edlund just comments on certain scenes in the film, plus giving us various interesting facts, in-depth details and anecdotes about the production values towards this action packed film.

DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE Extra:

Audio Commentary with Director John McTiernan, Screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh and Film Executive Tom Sherak: This audio commentary track was recorded separately and edited together and includes director John McTiernan, screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh, and former Fox executive Tom Sherak. A Night to Die For/McLane is Back [21:45] This to my mind was a totally pointless promotion for the film ‘DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE’ that includes some of the worst and unexplainable cameos from various people telling us what their favourite scenes in some of the different DIE HARD films and their favourite quotes as well. This does show some little bit more information on the film and also features a preview of the dramatic subway train station scene and how it was set up. DIE HARD 3 Featurette [4:19] This is a 20th Century Fox promotion film, and gives the usual in-depth look at the making-of the film ‘DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE.’ But we also get a look at the behind-the-scene filming, and the usual comments from cast and crew.
