Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘ENCANTO’ [2021] is about an exceptional family is bestowed with gifts that grant them powers, other than Mirabel [Stephanie Beatriz] who tries her best to fit in. ‘ENCANTO’ is about the multigenerational Madrigal family who protect their village after a traumatic past leads them to a life full of magical gifts. Each family member has been blessed with a special power and they all live together in their magical house “Casita.” From shapeshifting to healing, each family member uses their powers to help create a safe and sound community — all except one: Mirabel. While the animated film opens like any other Disney musical with fun colours and animations, and many have found the animated film to strike a chord when it comes to its themes of family and intergenerational trauma.

‘ENCANTO’ is set in the remote mountains of Columbia; each member of the Madrigal family has unique abilities – from “super strength” to being able to speak to animals. Even their house has magical powers with its own personality. However, there’s one exception – Mirabel hasn’t been bestowed with a gift, although that doesn’t dampen her spirits. Mirabel is still a happy young girl who does her part to keep things together, even if she stands out from the “super powered” family. But the Madrigals' incredible lives begin to fall apart when Mirabel has a mysterious vision of the house cracking up, which spells disaster for them all.

Stephanie Beatriz is a revelation as the voice behind the lead character Mirabel, who certainly doesn’t look or dress like a typical Disney princess. Stephanie Beatriz is exceptional with her honest and refreshing portrayal of a misfit girl on the verge of becoming an outcast because she’s so different. As Mirabel manoeuvres through the family’s colourful dynamics, she discovers her heritage along with hidden secrets. We’re treated to catchy tracks throughout the film by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The songs feature Mirabel’s quirky family members, each with their distinctive personality thanks to brilliant voice work from the cast. John Leguizamo is remarkable as the elusive uncle Bruno, a scene-stealer despite the character’s limited screen time. Maria Cecilia Botero is also memorable as the loving yet stern matriarch Abuela.

Amid colourful visuals and catchy songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the script, penned by Charise Castro Smith and Jared Bush (both of whom co-directed with Byron Howard), delivers worthy messages about community service, cooperation and family reconciliation. Along with the screenplay’s strong emphasis on magic — including divination — and the vivid dangers through which Mirabel must pass, the movie also includes a slightly ambiguous treatment of religion.

While its narrative is conventional, the animation and creativity behind ‘ENCANTO’ is anything but. The direction and dazzling animation make the most of the characters including Casita, while delivering little quirks throughout the film, along with some classic Disney-style cut scenes for good measure. Charise Castro Smith (screenplay/story) and Byron Howard (story), heartfelt scenario imbues heart and comedy and combined with the vibrant colours and Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s entertaining soundtrack, ‘ENCANTO’ becomes an animated film that speaks to all ages and is sure to become a massive hit for all ages,

Although it treads familiar beats, the film’s message about finding one’s true purpose in an environment where others seem to be living perfect lives will resonate with everyone. Amidst its stellar and vibrant animation, ‘ENCANTO’ celebrates the proverbial black sheep of the family. This is Disney’s 60th animated motion picture and is undoubtedly one of their most enjoyable films with re-watch value. A clear contender for the animated film of the year, ‘ENCANTO’ is infused with enough humour, colourful visuals, charming characters, and catchy tunes to enthral audiences of all ages.

In what is Disney’s most conventional film, ‘ENCANTO’ celebrates how ordinary people can be extraordinary, vibrant and touching, with a helping of candle-lit fun and magic.

‘ENCANTO’ is perhaps the least saccharine of any Disney film. Visually, the film is extraordinary, exploding with colour and action. The house itself is a dynamic character, with its communicating tiles, floorboards that deliver slippers, and an alarm clock that nudges the householders to move along.

The characters are charmingly animated, simultaneously broad and subtle. But, in the end, the animated film’s imparting is the all-important message that gifts do not have to be flashy and that miracles come from belief, perseverance, and love. The animated film never loses sight of these morals.

In the end, ‘ENCANTO’ teaches not just acceptance within a family but how family and community come together. These are big concepts, and younger viewers might not get them the first time. But like the best of family features — The Toy Story series, Coco, etc. ‘ENCANTO’ will be one that young children will return to as they grow. And that said, there is much for everyone to relish in this beautifully told magical tale.

Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Home Entertainment presented us ‘ENCANTO’ with a totally awesome 1080p reference image that is a blast of beautiful, well saturated and boldly display colours and of course enhanced with a wonderful 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There’s a terrific sharpness and clarity to the image with all the finer details showing through. The animated film is very enchanting to look at and also intoxicating on your eyes as you can really take in what a lovely animation this is from the folks at Disney. The depth of field is quite strong here in the image. Being an animated film of this type, it lends itself to a rather easy three dimensional appeal. Movements are smooth and natural with no issues handling rapid motions so no jitter or blurring distort the image at all during the feature’s playback. Blacks are deep, and really help to define these images and add lovely shadow work. No issues occur with any lost information as patterns; textures and detail all come through on darker surfaces and fabrics with good ease. Colours are absolutely stunning with fantastic saturation. There’s no focal one, as they all pop and showcase a bold flavour be there yellow, orange, blue, red, purple and others. There’s a great glow from magical qualities and displays in the film that get a good assist from the HDR applied to the frame.

Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Home Entertainment brings us ‘ENCANTO’ a very impressive 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience. There is some awesome stuff that comes with good force and presence from up top. When cracks form around the room they travel up top and across. Unique sounds and music float around above as well. It very lively, fun, and more loud and interesting an inclusion of the ceiling channel that you’d hope for in these mixes. The subwoofer has a lot more power than Disney tracks that have come before. You get a good feel for the rumble, especially in bigger action moments with magic, quaking and destruction. The music features some good bump as well. There are intermittent moments to nit-pick that something could have some more force to it, but it is pretty minimal. As mentioned, this is a rather playful and creatively construction soundscape. The sound has a good power and rolls around the room with feeling. Every possible little off-screen action/movement/sound is accounted for and the 360 degree vision of the sound is pretty impressive. But most of all vocals are wonderfully crisp and clear.

Thankfully, the image and audio are on the same level as the stunning animation in terms of quality. Also, there is a lot of quality content to see in the bonus features section. Overall, this is a pretty terrific little package to offer for the home video release of ‘ENCANTO.’ As always in a Disney animated film, the visuals are a total delight. Look at how a motif of butterflies is subtly represented in the pattern on Mirabel’s dress. There is also a panning shot of the Colombian community at dusk with its lights and candles blazing that are warm and welcoming. ‘ENCANTO’ animated film is about the pressure of living up to high expectations and the fear of revealing imperfections. It’s about outcasts and misfits in plain sight. Disney’s ‘ENCANTO’ has a simple but powerful message: It’s not what you do, but who you are that counts. Very Highly Recommended!
