Andrew’s 3D Blu-ray Review: The animated film ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ picks up 14 years since ‘THE INCREDIBLES’ first animated film hit the cinemas and a whole lot has changed in the superhero genre in that time. So does the highly-anticipated sequel prove to be worth the wait or is it several years too late, well, it's quite incredible actually and is totally well worth the wait. ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ sequel outshines the original, and shows us some totally slapstick genius, profound social comment and a monstrously funny infant combine to conjure a magical second outing for the superhero family and is a riotous return of PIXAR's superhero immortals.
Picking up immediately after the first animated film, the Parr family are facing off against the evil force named the “Underminer,” and the damage caused by their efforts leads to major consequences for them. Instead of something like the Sokovia Accords, the government just shuts down the Superhero Relocation Program, forcing Mr. Incredible [Craig T. Nelson], Elastigirl [Helen Hunter] and Frozone [Samuel L. Jackson] to return to their normal lives.
However, opportunity arises when the trio are contacted by superhero fan Winston Deavor [Bob Odenkirk] and his sister Evelyn [Catherine Keener] who wants to use their company DEVTECH to change the public's perception of superheroes. As to Mr. Incredibles ego, they want to start with Elastigirl, leaving him to take care of Violet Parr [Sarah Vowell], Dash Parr [Huck Milner] and the increasingly powerful Jack-Jack. Little do any of them know though that there is a mysterious villain out there called the “Screenslaver” (is the play on the words “screensaver” and “slave”) looking to cause trouble for all of our Superheroes.
There is a total confidence to this newest PIXAR animated film set piece, which means writer/director Brad Bird does not feel the need to add any extra sight gags or joke to entertain and he is right on the button. The extended action sequences are totally engrossing and totally inventive, even when tackling that classic superhero genre of stopping a runaway train. Boosted by the brilliant Michael Giacchino's pulsating awesome composed film music score and the gorgeous and glorious animation, especially now in glorious 3D imagery, and each set piece delivers those awesome thrills we expect from the Incredibles family and feels very different to the other types of animated superheroes, especially in a creepy section that sees Elastigirl try to hunt down the evil “Screenslaver.”
The main reason ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ and especially in the awesome 3D imagery, is that it such a treat to see the awesome Parr family again, in fighting off evil villains who threaten life in general. Even though they are Superheroes, they are dealing with certain issues from first love to self-confidence worries and we are able to empathise and connect with them all. In classic PIXAR fashion, the sharply-observed script means there is plenty for parents to identify with, and especially like "Why would they change maths?" On top of all that, we have never had to deal with a problem like the unpredictable Jack-Jack Parr before.
Talking of Jack-Jack, he is undoubtedly the ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ new bonus addition to the family, as everything he does is either adorable or hilarious and often a combination of the two. The climax of the first animated film and especially the classic animate short ‘Jack-Jack Attack’ only gave us a glimpse of Jack-Jack Parr’s awesome powers and we will not spoil Jack-Jack Parr's abilities in this review, but what we can say confidently that you will definitely and totally love him and, crucially, he is not overused and already I am pleased to have Jack-Jack Parr back in action in this brilliant PIXAR animated film sequel.
The smartest thing with this ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ animated film, it avoids the temptation to pack the animated film with mega gags at the expense of the genre, given how much it's changed since the original PIXAR animated film was released. Instead it chooses to show us a wholehearted Superheroes new mega adventure and leaves the self-deprecating humour to other superhero films, and of course resulting in a thrilling and joyful 118 minutes mega action packed rides that makes it one of the best superhero animated film of its genre released in 2018 so far and it will give you a sugar rush of innocent fun and excitement!

Blu-ray 3D Image Quality – Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and PIXAR Animation Studios presents us with a totally awesome stunning 1080p image and the 3D image is really enhanced and with the combination of the 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The lines and the details are incredibly clean, sharp and every intricacy has great detail. The special Incredibles fabric clothing, especially the newly designed clothing that Elastigirl wears, has textures that really stand out, especially to show off Edna’s design. The masks that the Incredible family wear, have some fine detail and the colouring is really bold. One thing the PIXAR animators love to do, is show off the subtle lighting and impressive shading, as well as showing off things like sunsets with vibrant reds and oranges in the sky. Blacks are really nice and dark, so bringing out the best in this animated film. On top of all that, the action packed sequences maintain superb clarity as individual bits of debris and electrical sparks fly in every direction and again we get a stunning cinematic three-dimensional quality.
Blu-ray 3D Audio Quality – Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and PIXAR Animation Studios brings us an awesome 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, and when you adjust the sound to your preference, the audio experience gives us a lot of audio happenings. The composed music score by Michael Giacchino helps to set the tone of the animated film, and especially lots of blasting horns that really get your speakers working overtime and with a lot of excitement. Sounds effects are utilised really well and again all five speakers shows off the sound effects really well, especially when Mr. Incredible is seen riding on the Underminder’s drill and also when you see Elastigirl cycling, gives you the feeling of objects moving from the front speakers to the rear ones. The subwoofer speaker also gets a good workout and the dialogue is well situated via the centre speaker and is crystal-clear and precise amid the loudest segments throughout the animated film. But when it comes to the bass sounds, is fairly commanding with plenty of rumbling weight and oomph to shake the settee and will definitely rattle the walls, so make sure the neighbours are not around if you live in a flat/apartment. So all in all, you get to experience an incredible sound sensation.

Fans of Milt Kahl will also be delighted to see some footage of him, as well as Brad’s fond reminisces of his mentor and Disney’s other elite animators, known as the Nine Old Men, who continue to influence him today. Contributors include: John Walker [Producer], Dave Mullins [Supervising Animator], Brad Bird [Writer/Director], Allan Barillaro [Supervising Animator], Elizabeth Thorsen [Animation Technical Coordinator], Nicole Ridgwell [Crowds Animator], Frank Abney III [Animator], Lindsay Andrus [Animator], Nicole Paradis Grindle [Producer], Amy Ellenwood [Executive Assistant To The Director], Bret Parker [Animation Second Unit and Crowds Supervisor], George Bruns [Disney Composer], Allie Johnson [Disney Animator], Frank Thomas [Disney Animator], Ralph Eggleston [Production Designer], Milt Kahl [Disney Animator], Adam Burke [Animator], Elizabeth Thorsen [Animation Technical Coordinator], Matt Nolte [Character Art Director], Tony Fucile [Supervising Animator and Character Designer], Bolhem Bouchiba [Animation Sketch Artist], Lance Fite [Animator] and Dave Mullins [Supervising Animator].
Audio Commentary with Brad Bird [Writer/Director], Dave Mullins [Animation Supervisors], Alan Barillaro [Animation Supervisor], Tony Fucille [Animation Second Unit] and Bret Parker [Animation Second Unit]: First up to introduce themselves is Brad Bird [Writer/Director] who informs us that he wants this audio commentary to be different, instead he wants his top team behind the scenes to do the audio commentary and they are Dave Mullins [Animation Supervisors], Alan Barillaro [Animation Supervisor], Tony Fucille [Animation Second Unit] and Bret Parker [Animation Second Unit] and are here to talk about their work on the animated film ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ and what they wanted to achieve something totally different from ‘The Incredibles’ that really stood out. They say that the Animation Supervisors want to bring out the characters personality, so that the audiences can really connect to these characters. They say they are really glad to come back again to produce the animated film ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ as they feel like they are a great unit who all work as a great team. At the start of the actual film after the first introduction of the Incredibles family, they wanted to bring something new and different to the animated film. As the animated film ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ actually begins, they talk about the situation with the “animation dallies” where they bring everyone into the viewing room to have a look at the latest rushes they have produced and to have an in-depth look at what they are viewing and to also show Brad Bird what has been done so far and to hear any critical comments on what he has viewed and to also approve on what he has just viewed and to also give the green light of what he has just viewed. When you see Dash Parr gulp down his vegetables which he hates. Then rushes off into the bedroom to put the television on and the small television in the kitchen is also turned at the same time, it shows you a mock Japanese Godzilla film, but it really is Mr. Jones the pet iguana formerly owned by Ron, the manager in ‘Toy Story.’ When you see the limousine turns up at the DETECH building, and you see Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone get out of the vehicle, the black chauffeur is voiced by the singer Usher. When we see the super monorail train set off on its maiden trip, but it all goes wrong and goes into reverse at high speed and out of control and we see Elastigirl go off on the ultra-high speed electric motorcycle to try to stop the train, which has been sabotaged by the nasty Evelyn Deavor and of course we see Elastigirl uses the ultra-high speed electric motorcycle to do leaps and bounds on all type of surfaces and when on the metal steel girder has a slight wobble and looks like Elastigirl is going to fall off but recovers, well Brad Bird wanted these moments to make it look realistic and dangerous, but of course Elastigirl saves the train from destruction at a very tense moment and we finally sigh a relief and relax that Elastigirl always comes to the rescue. The group of animators talk frankly about various aspects of the production, the visual design and the plot themes. It’s interesting how some of the comments pertain to placement and the arrangement of the scene, set up and so forth and from now on they just ramble on talking about stuff that bored me senseless, especially going on about their favourite scene they worked on and commenting in detail in what we are watching and is so totally pointless boring rhetoric and definitely not of any interest to me and makes hearing their comments so boring and makes gearing them drone on makes watching right to the very end a really yawing experience and only of interest to the staff at PIXAR. One thing that really annoyed me was the female contributor, what a totally ghastly and annoying voice, every time she butted in I felt like hitting her in the face to shut her up and tell her to get out of the recording room. As we finally get to the end of this audio commentary, everyone says that they want to say thank you for listening to us ramble on about the making of the animation ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ and thanks for letting them indulge, as we had a lot of fun and amazing time, and hoping to see us do ‘INCREDIBLES 3.’
Special Feature: Super Stuff [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1 / 2.39:1] [6:36] Here we get a bunch of PIXAR animators and crew from the film to go over all of the literally “super” things involved in bringing to life ‘INCREDIBLES 2.’ From buildings and vehicles to costumes and props and all done in a beautiful mid-century modern or how PIXAR is calling it: retro futurism. The concept art, sketches, and interviews here are all movie-making magic and are such a treat to take in, especially meet the makers and learn what it takes to design and build such a uniquely incredible world and we get to see a discussion of the “Retro-Futurism” world, the contrasts between the fantastic and the mundane, location details, character diversity, vehicles, and especially building the world of The Incredibles. Contributors include: Lance Fite [Animator], MontaQue Ruffin [Animator], Brad Bird [Writer/Director], Ralph Eggleston [Production Designer], Paul Abadilla [Sets Designer], John Walker [Producer], Philip Melschan [Previs Lead], Sophia Bush [Voice of Void], Fran Kala [Character Tailoring Lead], Nicole Paradis Grindle [Producer], Deanna Marsigliese [Character and Costume Designer] and Ted Mathot [Story Supervisor].
Special Feature: Paths to PIXAR: Everyday Heroes [2018] [1080p] [2.39:1 / 1.78:1] [11:40] A collection of Pixar team members and Brad Bird discussing how their personal family stories worked their way into scenes in the superhero sequel and also looks into family dynamics which come so strongly into focus on this project. Special Feature: Superbaby [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1 / 2.39:1] [4:57] Frankie & Paige from Disney Channel’s Bizaardvark spit rubbish rhymes and raps about baby Jack-Jack Parr while walking around PIXAR Animation Studios. Frankie & Paige are two annoying ignorant jerks and completely spoilt this particular special feature and I recommend you miss this one. Contributors include: Tony Fucile [Character Designer and Costume Designer], Bryan Imagire [Shading Art Director and Costume Designer], Bill Watral [Effects Supervisor] and Evan Bonifacio [Directing Animator].
Special Feature: Ralph Eggleston: Production Designer [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1] [2:07] Ralph Eggleston [Production Designer] talks in-depth about his work on the PIXAR animated film ‘INCREDIBLES 2.’ Ralph Eggleston is the PIXAR strong arm what exactly a Production Designer does and he goes into what his role entails at PIXAR and Ralph Eggleston informs us that he has worked ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Finding Nemo,’ ‘WALL•E,’ ‘The Incredibles,’ ‘Inside Out,’ ‘UP’ as well as some PIXAR short animations and of course ‘INCREDIBLES 2,’ and says he loves working on the PIXAR movies, even though it can be very frustrating and hard work, in the end it is very rewarding work. Despite the feature being short, it is still really great and very interesting.
Special Feature: Making BAO short [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1] [6:02] Writer/Director Domee Shi talks about her wonderful work on the animated PIXAR short. Domee Shi informs us that the word BAO in Chinese can be said two ways, the first is “steam bun” and the other way is “something precious.” We get to meet Domee Shi’s Mom all the way from China who is visiting PIXAR Animation Studios and shows everyone how to make Chinese dumplings and is a great success. Contributors include: Rona Liu [Production Designer] and Ian Megibben [Supervising Technical Director].

Finally, ‘INCREDIBLES 2’ is the rare sequel that lives up to everyone's massive expectations and delivers as much of the joy, pathos, and adventure as the original. Some critics and fans initially questioned the need for a sequel to ‘THE INCREDIBLES’ animated film from PIXAR, especially one that took more than a decade to produce. But director Brad Bird has struck magic once again with his exploration of contemporary family life via Superheroes and especially the animated film ‘INCREDIBLES 2.’ Brad Bird’s brilliant and adventurous animated film is nuanced on family life while remaining a hugely entertaining and often visually audacious PIXAR superhero animated film and is at the same time it is both Super and Subversive and this is the rare sequel that lives up to everyone's massive expectations and delivers as much of the joy, pathos, and adventure as the original PIXAR animated film. Very Highly Recommended!
