Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ [2001] is set in the all-American sitcom-style town of Retroville, in which 1950’s family values go hand in hand with futuristic hi-tech gadgetry, and ‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ introduces its eponymous hero Jimmy Neutron [voice by Debi Derryberry] as a fearsomely brainy know-it-all who never goes anywhere without his trusty robot dog Goddard [Frank Welker].
Jimmy Neutron is a boy genius with more nifty inventions in his bedroom than the average young Einstein. Along with a push-button bed maker, a virtual toothbrush and an automatic hair styling device, he has a whole underground lab of clever contraptions. Using his high-powered computer, Jimmy Neutron can scan the heavens for life forms and hone in on far off galaxies.
But while the pint-sized whiz kid Jimmy Neutron has a handle on thermodynamics and jet propulsion, he’s way out to lunch in the “cool” department. Jimmy Neutron parents [voices of Megan Cavanagh and Mark DeCarlo] may tolerate his roof wrecking adventures, but the wonder brain gets no respect from his fellow classmates who refer to him as the neighbourhood “nerdtron” until aliens abduct all their parents. Then they have to turn to Jimmy Neutron to save the day.
Jimmy Neutron wonders what life would be like without his parents around to tell him what to do. Jimmy Neutron finds out soon enough when all the parents of Retroville are kidnapped by invading aliens – the dreaded, gross and hilarious “Yokians.” Now it's up to Jimmy Neutron, Goddard [voice by Michael Jonascu], his best friend Carl Wheezer [voice by Rob Paulsen], and his rival, Cindy Vortex [voice by Carolyn Lawrence], to travel across the universe and rescue all of the parents, and all before dinner time.
Modifying some amusement park rides, the young inventor and his peers mount a full-scale attack on the badly behaved King Goobot [voice by Patrick Stewart] and his bumbling assistant, Prime Minister Ooblar [voice by Martin Short].
Following a night of unchecked indulgences, Jimmy Neutron and his peers discover that being parentless isn’t all it’s cracked up to be… a worthwhile titbits compared with many other “children-know-best” animated films.
‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ also has a wide range of likable characters; lead by of course Jimmy Neutron himself and is the sort of young boy most of us knew at one point, though it's doubtful any of our friends would have been able to invent a shrinking ray. Jimmy Neutron's extremely enthusiastic and his never-say-die attitude is certainly a key element in his charm. Parents been kidnapped by aliens? Not a problem, says Jimmy Neutron. And he's been surrounded by equally amiable kids, particularly his two best friends.
‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ has plenty of animated violence between children and aliens, schoolyard name-calling and pre-adolescent bantering. The gooey green space invaders with zapping spears, mind-altering headgear, and sacrificial intentions may also be slightly disturbing for young children, so best that parents watch this animated film to assure them that what they are watching is not real life.
Parents of music-savvy minors may find themselves heading out to buy this film’s energetic soundtrack showcasing artists like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and ‘N Sync. But be forewarned, along with the upbeat tunes cheering on Jimmy Neutron and the “Kids in America,” there will of course be some parents who just don’t understand the lyrics.
The voice acting is right where it needs to be for an animated film of this scenario. The villain and his henchmen are funny and over-the-top, Judy is a sensible parent, Hugh is her comic foil, and all the young children sound the way they should for an animated film like this. The interactions sound like all the actors were simultaneously present while they recorded their lines and it is all very cohesive and tonally appropriate. The premise is pretty creative and the execution very efficient. There are some plot clichés in this film that aren't played up for laughs, but they are forgivable. The animated film's pacing is perfect. There's never a scene that feels like it drags, or scenes that come and go for no reason. Only the necessary things are ever shown and things move along swiftly and steadily, which is great for a young children's animated film.
Spiritual content: Jimmy Neutron gives a tacit endorsement to the theory of evolution, comparing humans to monkeys and saying their DNA only differs slightly. The “Yokians” who worship Poultra the God of Wrath, which is a giant, three-eyed chicken and they plan to sacrifice all the parents to it.
‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ is a well-crafted animated film and is a funny, silly, and colourfully animated children's film featuring Jimmy Neutron, the amazing wunderkind whose penchant for invention leads him to amazing adventures. Jimmy Neutron has created all kinds of gadgets to make his life easier, including a robotic dog, Goddard, who follows him everywhere. Jimmy Neutron's dim-witted father is awed by the boy's abilities, but his no-nonsense mother who just wants Jimmy Neutron to stay out of trouble. Jimmy Neutron and his friend Carl, use a homemade spaceship to launch a satellite. The spaceship crashes, and things go downhill from there. Jimmy Neutron's satellite inadvertently beams a video of him with his parents to the planet Yolkus, and the egg-shaped aliens there decide that Jimmy's parents look good enough to eat. It's not necessarily ground-breaking, but it is fun, and solid animated film that is deserving of repeated viewings and I suspect young children will pester their parents for repeat viewing.
Jimmy Neutron is a boy genius and way ahead of his friends, but when it comes to being cool, he's a little behind. All until one day when his parents and parents all over Earth are kidnapped by aliens, it's up to him to lead all the children of the world to rescue their parents.
If you're looking at this animated film, thinking that it's like any other children's film and only for children, you might be right or wrong. I guess it depends because I actually found this movie entertaining and light hearted. Yeah, some jokes are mainly for the younger generation but some are also funny for the older people.
The animation, as you can tell, is not ground-breaking or great in any way but it did not bother me. You get used to it after a few minutes. The thing I like about the animated film is that it has some really creative and imaginative ideas on the whole story. The jokes are somewhere ranging to not-so-funny to laugh-out-loud-funny.

Special Feature: Music Video: Leave It Up To Me by Aaron Carter [2001] [1080p] [1.37:1] [3:30] The music video opens with Aaron Carter in a boring tour of a space museum. As the tour guide instructs him and the rest of his classmates to move onwards, Aaron Carter stumbles near a door to a restricted area. Aaron Carter enters it as his clothes morph into a futuristic outfit. Throughout the video, Aaron Carter sits in a chair near a control console and a stellar map that shows him singing. Among the buttons on the console is one that turns him CGI while singing with a group of men in black. While performing the song, Aaron Carter glances over near the screen, only to realize it's displaying a countdown warning about it self-destructing. Aaron Carter jumps and aborts it just in time, as the picture zooms out to black and where film clips are shown on the control screen instead of Aaron Carter singing. At the very end, instead of the picture zooming out, an explosion is shown with Jimmy on his rocket zooming by.

CLIFFHANGERS – CALLING ALL ALIENS: With this second special feature we view ‘CALLING ALL ALIENS’ and is a special five-part cliff-hanger series of Jimmy Neutron animated shorts and it serves as a prologue to the animated film ‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ and they are as follows:
Leave A Message After The Beam [2001] [1080p] [1.37:1] [1:04] In “Leave A Message After The Beam,” Jimmy Neutron programs a Matter Transporter onto Goddard while only in his boxers. To test the invention out, he throws a sticky-dart at a target and orders Goddard to beam the dart to his hand. Goddard does this successfully and Jimmy Neutron is amazed proclaiming he doesn't need to take the bus to school since he can just beam into his classroom. Vox then tells Jimmy Neutron he has a message from deep space and is excited at the possibility of contact with an advanced alien race. Jimmy Neutron tells Goddard, “They're never gonna believe this at school, Goddard,” at which point Goddard uses Jimmy's matter transporter to send Jimmy Neutron to his classroom in just his boxer shorts, where his fellow students laugh out loud at his embarrassment. Humiliated Jimmy Neutron grabs a globe and covers himself with it and runs out of the classroom.
The Night the Lights Went Out In Retroville [2001] [1080p] [1.37:1] [1:11] In “The Night the Lights Went Out In Retroville,” Jimmy Neutron reveals that he didn't hear the message from space because it was erased before he got back home from school. Jimmy Neutron and Carl then patch into Retroville's power grid and use all the lights in Retroville to form a greeting to the aliens. Jimmy Neutron starts with messages of “Greetings from Earth” and “We Love [With Alien Face]” but ultimately decides on “Free Parking.” After Carl questions whether the aliens can see the greeting from space, Jimmy "turns up the juice," but this causes a blackout in Retroville.
Sound Wave Hello [2001] [1080p] [1.37:1] [1:20] In "Sound Wave Hello," Jimmy Neutronand Carl fall from where they were tampering with the power grid and land in the Neutrons' fireplace after going through their chimney. Jimmy’s Dad Hugh sees both of them but thinks Jimmy Neutron is Santa Claus while Carl is a “big elf.” The scene then changes to Jimmy Neutron outside with his “yellow scope,” and Sheen runs up to him and tells him about his Ultralord talking wrist watch with over 27 different sayings. Jimmy Neutron then tells Sheen that the “yellow scope” amplifies one's voice 34 million times in order to allow for transmission of messages across the galaxy. Jimmy Neutron's first attempt at amplifying his voice doesn't work, and Sheen points out that this is because the “on” switch isn't on. After turning on the “on” switch, a saying on Sheen's Ultralord watch is amplified successfully, causing part of the frame of Mr. and Mrs. Applebee's house to start falling towards them instead of transmitting anything into space.
Rocket Tear [2001] [1080p] [1.37:1] [1:10] In “Rocket Tear,” in the frame of the Applebee home doesn't crush Jimmy and Sheen because it lands on them at an empty space where a window was located previously (before being shattered by the amplified watch saying). Sheen then proclaims that the yellowscope worked because, despite their lack of contact with aliens, they did make contact with Mr. and Mrs. Applebee (who can be seen inside a room in their house now that part of the frame is gone). In the next scene, Jimmy Neutron is building a rocket in hopes of flying it high enough to launch a communication satellite, but Cindy and Libby make fun of it by calling the rocket it a “nerd” mobile. Carl then comes back and gets in the rocket with JimmyNeutron, after which Jimmy Neutron starts up the rocket and they “blast off.”
Arithemticket To Ride [2001] [1080p] [1.37:1] [1:06] In “Arithemticket To Ride,” it is revealed that Jimmy Neutron and Carl don't make it far in the rocket since they crash into a nearby bush. Cindy and Libby laugh at them after Carl asks, "Is this Mars?" Jimmy Neutron and Carl are then shown getting ready to try the launch again from the chimney since Jimmy says this is a "perfectly stable launching platform." Before launch, Carl asks why he has a toaster, but Jimmy Neutron corrects him by saying that it's a communication satellite. After Jimmy Neutron gives Carl a series of math problems that give results of 5... 4... 3... 2 ...1, Jimmy Neutron says "Blast off!" and the two are shown heading towards space after a successful launch.

Finally, this delightful Nickelodeon computer animated film ‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ is colourful, clever and fun to watch. Also ‘JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS’ is that perfect combination of bright colourful adventure to entertain young children and incorporate clever jokes and retro cultural references to amuse the adults. Screenwriters John A. Davis, David N. Weiss, J. David Stem and Steve Oedekerk may have borrowed from oldies like the sci-fi film ‘Invaders From Mars’ and their characters are fully realized and their details are often inspired. Overall, this is a colourful and entertaining animated film that will amuse children and at least be viewed by adults with some air of interest. There's a nice important message here for the children, especially from Jimmy Neutron where he says, “You can't do without your parents.” Highly Recommended!
