Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM’ 3D [2017] takes place three years after the catastrophic events of Jurassic World left the revamped Jurassic Park abandoned. When the volcano on the island where the park was located is forecasted to erupt, Claire Dearing [Bryce Dallas Howard], who now works for the Dinosaur Preservation Group, is asked by the billionaire who helped start the original park to go on a secret mission to rescue the remaining dinosaurs so they can be taken to a special preserve. She asks Owen Grady [Chris Pratt], her now ex-boyfriend, to accompany her on the trip in order to track Blue, his beloved velociraptor. During the trip, it's clear that Claire Dearing and Owen Grady are in over their heads; eventually they're forced into a life-or-death situation and both for themselves and for the dinosaurs they want to save.
The first act of the film includes a few decent suspense sequences, and it piles on the agony as characters are imperilled simultaneously by an erupting volcano and maddened saurian – with Chris Pratt briefly demonstrating his comic chops as he tries to evade lava while partially paralysed from a tranquilliser dart. The film doesn’t really show any of J.A. Bayona’s style until – finally! – the dinosaurs get off the island and are let loose in a setting new to the series, a spooky old house with an evil lair in the sub-basement.
One of the boldest conceits here is to combine the dinosaur action with elements of gothic horror. Some of the story unfolds in the Lockwood Mansion, a vast and draughty old pile that comes complete with terraces, greenhouses, underground labs, labyrinthine corridors, dumbwaiters (very useful for hiding in whenever the Indoraptor is nearby and its own exhibition hall. This appears to have been modelled on the Natural History Museum.
Things get complicated when lava threatens to engulf the island, and when Lockwood’s turncoat chief of staff Eli Mills [Rafe Spall] turns out to be running a secret business to sell the saved dinosaurs for experiments, hunting or anything else that turns a buck. The site of the battle between Eco’s and villains, once the island is in flames, is Lockwood’s cavernous mansion – vast enough to hold countless dinosaurs.
There are some positives. The shot of a doomed brachiosaur as the group leave Isla Nublar is terribly sad, but also unnecessarily cruel. Later, a rotating camera tracking the Indoraptor – the film’s undercooked new Big Bad – as it enters a bedroom has J.A. Bayona fully engaging his skills as a horror maestro. The mean streak that ran through the last film has also been notably toned down, with little remaining of the last film’s derision of women. Nevertheless, nothing can redeem the crushing, insulting stupidity of the enterprise as a whole.
Despite this action-packed sequel's uneven tone, director J.A. Bayona continues to thrill audiences with jump-worthy suspense and to create a bond between viewers and the dinosaurs. The elements of a summer blockbuster are all there: charismatic stars, smarmy villains like Rafe Spall, who's inherited his father Timothy Spall's ability to play evil quite well, as well as plucky and adorable Isabella Sermon, in her first role, plus we get the sweeping score of Michael Giacchino, doing a wonderful job of changeling John Williams mantra, and lots and lots of heart-stopping action. But something keeps this sequel from ranking up there with the best of the Jurassic films. It explores too many avenues and doesn't close the loop on a few of the issues it raises.
While the story requires suspension of disbelief in several places and Rafe Spall's character is all but moustache-twirling in his stereotypical villainy as well as Toby Jones who is equally nasty, but they both get their ultimate comeuppance, and deservedly so, especially as they were made to do some really cheesy ghastly American accents and should of got some Raspberry Awards. ‘JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM’ 3D still delivers where it ultimately counts: the dinosaurs. The intricate computer-generated creatures are so convincing and so terrifying that audiences will likely grab their armrests or their seatmates during key moments. One scene in particular involving young Maisie and a food chain-topping dinosaur will definitely tie your stomach in knots. So go for the action and the dread, but don't expect a film that's nearly as iconic as the original Jurassic Park, but despite this, I still enjoyed this latest franchise.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – Universal Pictures presents us ‘JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM’ 3D with an awesome film that utilizes a stylized visual design comprised of various elements that represent the differing environs featured in the story. I found the film’s deep greys, rich blacks and use of colour to be thematically complimentary. Contrast is spot on which empower whites without washing away detail. Brightly lit sequences are snappy and crisp offering highlights that are multi-staged and layered. Blacks are dynamic and gradational and detail in shadows is just as strong. The large amount of CGI featured in the film softens some of the background elements but I didn’t find it to be excessive or distracting as the quality of the video is high. It isn’t always razor sharp but it is cleanly rendered which enhances the perception of fine detail. Shot digitally, the video is whistle clean and pleasing which I found coincides nicely with its storyline. So all in all this a five star 3D visual experience.
3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – Universal Pictures brings us ‘JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM’ 3D in an awesome 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience and is an articulated and commanding presentation that will reward those with systems capable of thoroughly reproducing its elements. This can be an aggressive presentation that produces powerful dynamics and deep bass transients that underscore the action with aplomb. I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging and purposeful sound design that transforms the room into a three-dimensional soundstage. Pinpoint imaging draws out both large and small sounds allowing their directional correlation that is based upon the onscreen events to be definable within the room’s acoustic boundaries. Dialogue is definitive and appreciably lucid through the centre channel. Low frequency effects are applied authoritatively and effectively underscore the bombastic and dramatic aspects of the audio. This mix delivers bass response that can be room shaking as it extends down to lower frequencies that on occasion approach skin tingling regions. This definitely gets a five star audio experience.

Personally, I thought this was the biggest load of crap I have ever heard and a complete waste of space, especially even having this as a special feature. The song was sung on the last day of shooting.

Finally, ‘JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM’ 3D favours more of a style over substance essence that leaves it feeling like a poor cousin next to its predecessor but, I found it had enough going for it to keep me entertained for two hours. It comes to Blu-ray in this Combo Pack from Universal Pictures that features reference quality high definition 3D image, outstanding 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound and a solid immersive listening experience. Also included is a decent supplemental package that is worth exploring if you enjoyed the film. As a home theatre enthusiast, I am pleased to add ‘JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM’ 3D to my Blu-ray collection. If you’re looking for a solid home theatre sound demonstration Blu-ray this is right up your alley. There are some new additions, mostly through the character of Elli, but he's extremely annoying throughout the film and is mainly used for unfunny comedy. Now onto the film itself and it has some very good visuals and action sequences, specifically the volcano part in the beginning. The action is choreographed well, and the cinematography in the film just looks great. The CGI for the dinosaurs is very good. Overall though, the film is very entertaining. Highly Recommended!
