Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: MARVEL STUDIOS: ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D [2019] presents us with one of the most ambitious, entertaining, emotional, and stunning blockbusters we’ve ever seen, and the best film in the MARVEL STUDIOS Cinematic Universe so far and a fitting end to this franchise. MARVEL STUDIOS: ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D is hugely ambitious, ridiculous, over-the-top superhero filmmaking and the Avengers return to fight back against THANOS – but how does it stack up against the previous MARVEL STUDIOS: Infinity War film and how do you follow the pop culture event of the decade?

MARVEL STUDIOS: ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D film is hugely ambitious, ridiculous, over-the-top superhero filmmaking and I loved it. And of course there is that elusive answer I suspect you are asking? Well, as it turns out the brothers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo decide NOT to follow anything –  because despite its close connection to ‘AVENGERS: Infinity War,’ which originally the film was going to be titled ‘AVENGERS:  War part 2,  and of course the eminently entertaining ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D is a different sort of sci-fi film altogether.

Of course, it sort of picks up more or less exactly where the first film left off, featuring a considerable number of the same actors and has a few key scenes that echo those from the earlier film, but ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D is a much more elaborate and complicated type of film, compared to the previous earlier film. The only negative aspect of the film and it’s here that we hit some trouble, as I thought it was very slow and tedious and took ages for things to happen and wanted some sort action to happen, but when it does get going it really lifts the film to a higher level and you witness some really powerful action scenes.

As ever, it’s difficult to discuss this film without discussing and giving away the plot elements of the film and some might consider off-limits, and this is definitely a sci-fi film best enjoyed without too much prior knowledge. However, I think it’s fair to say that an encyclopaedic knowledge of MARVEL STUDIOS films will be helpful when watching ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D film, but not absolutely essential.

Of course at the very least, you will definitely need to have watched ‘AVENGERS: Infinity War’ 3D film, as well as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and even ‘Thor: The Dark World’ have considerable influence on the challenges faced by our Marvel heroes this time around, and the emotional beats of the final 45 minutes or so definitely hit harder if you’re familiar with the eleven-year old, MARVEL STUDIOS film franchise build-up.

Sometimes, ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D hits you over the head with this unique multi-film legacy, stuffing its cast with surprise cameos, call backs, new takes on old scenes and reminders of what came before, but ultimately it’s hard to begrudge its tapestry of influence. What other sci-fi film franchise has achieved this build-up of storytelling, characters and ongoing conflicts? And why shouldn’t they show that off after so many other extended universe franchises have crashed and burned – especially when they were so entertaining? Robert Downey Jr, meanwhile, brings some real pathos to Tony Stark and the 2008’s ‘Iron Man.’ While Karen Gillan continues to expand on her murderous cyborg Nebula.

Is the film perfect, well definitely not, especially in the quiet slower moments of the film, as I needed some action adrenaline action pack scenes to really make me sit up and feel part of the action. Also, after painting quite a nuanced portrait of Josh Brolin’s THANOS in the previous film franchise, but ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D throws away a lot of this characterisation, making him a far less involved and more two-dimensional threat by the story’s close, but when he was being beaten up real bad, I kept shouting kill him and wanting them to finish of this nasty vicious character.

Still, it’s hard to begrudge the MARVEL STUDIOS Cinematic Universe franchise getting a little self-indulgent in what largely amounts to a 181 minute-long victory lap. Somehow, some way, MARVEL STUDIOS and the brothers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo did what nobody else could and successfully adapted the sprawling, overlapping world of comic-book superheroes to screen, which with previous directors would have seemed impossible.

Finally, to sum up ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ 3D film, is the culmination of so much and despite a few flaws, it is an incredibly impressive, nearly impossible thing to behold and it to see view this film for the first time, was quite overwhelming and it definitely needs to be view a few more times to take in the jest of the story line and to also take in all, especially the amazing over the top action scenes, and seeing the film in 3D really enhances your enjoyment and to view it in 2D was rather flat, as 3D brings you right into the experience of the film, so well done MARVEL STUDIOS and the brothers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, for ending this AVENGERS franchise to a the ultimate grand finale.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – MARVEL STUDIOS and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures presents to us the 3D film ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ in a stunning and awesome 3D 1080p image and of course enhanced with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Again the good news is that is that the 3D presentation looks absolutely stunning and especially with a great depth that brings one closer to the action-packed adventure in this MARVEL STUDIOS film franchise. Here we have a really beautiful looking production value, especially with the richness of the cinematography by Trent Opaloch comes to life magnificently with this high quality image and of course the clarity remains consistently impressive throughout the presentation and the plethora of the pallet of colours are truly satisfying. The only negative aspect of the 3D image is with the dark scenes, that at times I had a job to see very clearly and I hate and detest scenes like this, as I want to see clearly what is happening in those scenes. But overall, this is a show stopping 3D presentation which shouldn't go overlooked by Marvel fans and is one of the best 3D presentations by MARVEL STUDIOS and is definitely a must-own 3D Blu-ray release.

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – MARVEL STUDIOS and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures bring us the 3D film ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ with an award winning outstanding 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. From the opening moments, the audio experience sets out to immediately immerse viewers with the sounds of rustling leaves and the wind blowing through trees filling the room with all of your speakers. Later on in the film when we encounter fat slob THANOS at his idyllic cabin, the sides and rears come alive with the local wildlife fluttering and chirping all around you, making you feel you are actually there. Other subtle audio atmospheric experiences continuously envelopment the listening area with the distant noise of a busy military base, hearing the echoes inside space ships and the psychedelic noise when traveling through the quantum realm of space. With the powerful action sequences in the film, with the eruption with the debris scattering everywhere, heroes and monsters flying in every direction and the grunting yells of everyone surround the listener, generating a fantastically satisfying 360 degree sound field. Also outstanding is Alan Silvestri's film composition that creates and exhibits a great deal of warmth and exceptional distinction within the orchestration while the dialogue and character interactions remain precise and intelligible amid the chaotic mayhem seen in the action packed scenes in the film. Also totally amazing is the sounds of the massive explosions, gunfire and time jump with a wall-rattling impact and palpable audio presence. So all in all, this is definitely a 5 star audio presentation.

2D Blu-ray Special Features and Extras:

Special Feature: Play Movie with Intro by Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo [Contains Spoilers] [2019] [1080p] [1.78:1] [2:33] Here the director brothers discuss the film's, and the series, emotional and total conclusion of the entire years-long Marvel Cinematic Universe saga. They also touch on the production's scope and their time with MARVEL STUDIOS.

Audio Commentary with Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo and Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely: Here we are introduced to Anthony Russo and Joe Russo to talk about the film ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ they directed. But also in the recording session is Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, The first scene we get to view in the film is of a young girl learning how to shoot an arrow, and we are informed that is it actually Anthony Russo’s daughter. As we get into the film and the four of them discuss particular scenes in the film and why they were filmed in a particular way, well for me, they talked of nothing really outstanding about the film in general, only behind-the-scene gossip, and also go into long talk about what was going on in a scene and why, which we could easily work out for ourselves. To me it was totally boring waffle, and they also talk about what is going on in a particular scene that we can work out for ourselves, and also boringly, state the obvious, and insult us that scenes we view we cannot work out for ourselves, and after about an hour or see I started to get totally bored out of my mind, I would of rather had long gaps of silence to break the monotony their droning rhetoric. On top of all that, they keep congratulating each other, which was another boring factor towards this audio commentary and all in all, overall, this audio commentary is 100% garbage vacuous rubbish and it really made me very angry how other Blu-ray Reviewers have raved over this audio commentary, obviously they must of either listened to another audio commentary or more likely probably copied someone else’s audio commentary review and as far as I am concerned this only gets a one star rating and that is pushing it abit.

Finally, MARVEL STUDIOS: ‘AVENGERS ENDGAME’ 3D is all about the power of friendship supercharges the heroic finale of the MARVEL STUDIOS franchise series. The MARVEL STUDIOS has kept the faith by smartening up most of its sci-fi films, and not dumbing them down, and gives the audience’s appetite for surprise, its capacity for complexity. When the final battle comes at the end in the film AVENGERS ENDGAME’ we get to see every MARVEL STUDIOS character you can think of from the past decade shows up for one more assault on cosmic evil, but thrilling all the same, and followed by a delicate coda, with so many stories, and even many adventures to come. Somehow, MARVEL STUDIOS did what nobody else could and successfully adapted the sprawling, overlapping world of comic-book superheroes to the screen. It’s still hard to believe even after seeing ‘AVENGERS ENDGAME’ what once seemed like an impossible dream is now a phenomenal reality, and one that audiences are going to want to experience it all over and over again. But between Josh Brolin’s continued excellence as THANOS, a moral monster who believes in the righteousness of his cause, and the filmmakers’ effortless popcorn-movie poetry, Endgame is a muscular send-off to this series of comic-book extravaganzas. Wherever MARVEL STUDIOS goes from here, the company’s shadow will loom large on the commercial horizon for years to come. Very Highly Recommeded!
