Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘BLACK PANTHER’ [2018] is the first film in the Marvel Comic cinematic universe to centre on a superhero of colour: African prince-turned-king T'Challa [Chadwick Boseman], aka the Black Panther. As in all superhero film, there's plenty of violence, in this case, mostly brutal hand-to-hand combat that gets quite intense, with bloody injuries and even some deaths. Although there are a few shoot-outs with super-powered guns/cannons (as well as some cold-blooded killings), the majority of the action features spear and blade fighting. That said, some confrontations do include larger, explosive battles and very destructive car chases.

Set mostly in the fictional African nation of Wakanda, the movie features not only the first mostly black ensemble cast in superhero-film history. Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira, and Daniel Kaluuya co-star, but also feature an all-female royal guard and a brilliant female inventor/engineer. Families who want to view the film ‘BLACK PANTHER’ will I suspect have plenty to talk about afterward, from its portrayal of race and gender to the overall importance of having black superheroes as the main characters, rather than sidekicks.

The ‘BLACK PANTHER’ film is a film beyond the average superhero movie. There's an interesting and well plotted story with themes of family loyalty and community responsibility, and especially it is very witty and exciting and very entertaining, and since its release it has been the talk of the town and especially a new direction for Marvel Comics, as it is especially positive is the representation of Black heroes, both male and female, which is all too rare in media. The female characters are strong and smart and important to the plot. Even the villain is a complex character, a person shaped by his history and surroundings to pursue violence, not a cartoon villain. There is very little romance, but the relationships alluded to are those of men and women who show each other respect.

Once again there is of course lots of violence in the film, but of course it is mainly super hero violence of the fantasy kind, because we view lots of shootouts, punching, stabbing, fighter planes, explosions, and a large scale battle, where the violence is not unduly glorified but it's definitely a movie where people get to fight a lot. If children who view this film, have viewed other superhero films like Avengers or Thor, or read superhero comics, then they will love this fantasy film, as all the characters in the end give out a very positive messages of this film and I also know the young viewers will love the young female character, who will be impressed  by the female inventor, and the cool tech, and talking about the interesting story line and discussing the characters relationships and choices, who gives a much more interesting engaging reaction than we get with many films.

The plot bridges the gap between 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and the forthcoming ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and takes in T’Challa’s coronation and a dormant threat to his kingdom that’s consequently shaken awake. This takes the form of Michael B Jordan’s Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, a vengeful Wakandan exile with his own eye on the throne, and Ulysses Klaue [pronounced claw] a brawny arms dealer played by Andy Serkis who speaks in a spicy Afrikaner bark, and whose attentions are turned on the country’s vast deposits of Vibranium, an indestructible metal that often comes in useful in fantasy films like this.

The ‘BLACK PANTHER’ film is a radically different kind of comic-book movie, one with a proud Afrocentric twist, featuring a nearly all-black cast, that largely ignores the United States and focuses instead on the fictional nation of the African nation of Wakanda, and guess what: Virtually everything that distinguishes “Black Panther” from past Marvel Comic pictures works to this standalone entry’s advantage.

Finally, whenever the end credits appears in a film in the cinema, people walk out, well nine times out of ten they miss out on extra film footage at the end, well again for fans of this film should again stay to the very end of the end credits as you get two nice film extra bonuses, the first bonus film clip happens at the end of the 3D end credits and at right at the end of the final end credits, you get the appearance of the winter soldier and the next chapter in the MARVEL STUDIOS film franchise.

Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and MARVEL STUDIOS presents us with a stunning 1080p and equally impressive and outstanding 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The image is, of course, crisp and immaculately detailed. Even in dimly-lit sequences such as the opening assault in the Sambisa Forest, shadow detail remains robust. Its lush, vibrant palette frequently dazzles, most memorably the vivid colours of the Wakandans' clothing. On top of all that, what is also impressive is the searing African sun, the ever-present neon alongside the streets of Busan, the highlights of gleaming skin and armour, and the blue glow of vibranium-powered tech repeatedly leaving me awestruck, and helps to greatly heighten an already terrific image experience. Some of the more core visuals that really lend themselves to a 3D presentation shine. Ships appear to fly through space with a tangible sense of distance from land, more distant sky, and one another. The holographic technology various character employ, as screens and images and readouts appear to hover over their wrists, is quite impressively shapely. Additional extra-screen goodness abounds. Rifle barrels stick out during an action scene in chapter two and plenty of extension and depth alike draws the viewer in close to the climactic battle sequence.

Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and MARVEL STUDIOS brings us with a stunning 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience. Once the volume is properly set, the audio track is quite good, though not quite a beast. Bass is present but not often in any prodigious quantities. There's enough support to the composed music, explosions, power flying craft, car chases, and a large-scale battle at film's end to add some dynamism to the track, but this one certainly doesn't rock the stage with any serious, big-time authority. Percussion drum beats are perhaps a notable exception, offering plenty of weight to each strike. Still, the audio track is never shy about engaging every speaker. It's frequently very open, sprawling about and drawing the listener squarely into the middle of any given scene, from fights for supremacy to the film's climactic battle where all sorts of chaotic sound elements present but never draw the listener's attention away from the main-draw, on-screen action. Several discrete effects are very enjoyable. A tire rolls into the back right speaker following the big car chase in the middle of the film, and craft distinctly fly through the stage towards the climax. Minor atmospheric details are handled well, and dialogue is clear and detailed with natural front-centre positioning and some excellent reverberation at the 97-minute mark. So overall this gets a 5 star rating.

2D Blu-ray Special Features and Extras:

Special Feature: Play Movie With Director Ryan Coogler Intro [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1] [1:23] Director Ryan Coogler discusses the honour of bringing the character and Black Panther comic book to the screen, and also bringing powerful women into the film, and the themes that connect to him and wide audiences alike. I wish the director Ryan Coogler would speak in proper English, as I had a terrible time trying to understand what he was trying to say. On top of all that, Ryan Coogler talks such pompous rubbish about the storyline and the outline of the film.

Special Feature: Crowning of a New King [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1 / 2.39:1] [5:34] Here we take a look at Black Panther's debut in the Marvel film ‘The Avengers: Civil War,’ and the character's place in the film, the costume, the character's grounded and relatable origins, the character's journey between Civil War and this film, the character's comic origins, the film's driving story, and much more. Contributors include: Kevin Feige p.g.a. (Producer), Nate Moore (Executive Producer), Ryan Coogler (Co-Writer/Director), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther) and Danai Gurira (Okoye).

Special Feature: The Hidden Kingdom Revealed [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1 / 2.39:1] [6:57] Here we get to view the set and costume designers reveal their real-world African influences for Wakanda and touches on the fictional kingdom of Wakanda and how it was brought to life. It shows the intricate detail used to build this place while keeping it grounded in reality enough to make it feel like a place here on Earth instead of an alien world. Contributors include: Kevin Feige, p.g.a. [Producer], Nate Moore [Executive Producer], Michael B. Jordan [Erik Killmonger], Ryan Coogler [Co-Writer/Director], Winston Duke [M’Baku], Chadwick Boseman [T’Challa/Black Panther], Hannah Beachler [Production Designer], Ruth Carter [Costume Designer], Lupita Nyong’o [Nakia], Letitia Wright [Shuri], Daniel Kaluuya [W’Kabi], Danai Gurira [Okoye] and Beth McGuire [Dialect Coach].

Special Feature: The Warriors Within [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1 / 2.39:1] [6:08] Here we get a discussion of the prominent role women play in Wakanda, with focus on several of the film's key female characters and also examine the strong women of Wakanda and talk about the focus placed on the women of Wakanda and how important it was to show them in positions of power and reverence. There is also a bit of background laid out about each of the women in central character roles and their relationship with King T’Challa. Contributors include: Kevin Feige p.g.a. (Producer), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Nate Moore (Executive Producer), Ryan Coogler (Co-Writer/Director), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Angela Bassett (Ramonda), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Jonathan Eusebio (Stunt Coordinator) and Andy Gill (Stunt Coordinator).

Special Feature: Wakanda Revealed: Exploring the Technology [2018] [1080p] [1.78:1 / 2.39:1] [6:16] This piece explores the critical role Vibranium plays in the story, including how it has helped develop the land and its use in clothing, weapons, vehicles and we also hear how the technology was a massive integral part of the film ‘BLACK PANTHER,’ with Wakanda being the most technologically advanced nation in the world. This feature shows how the technology of the African nation came to be in this film and how important it is to the world of ‘BLACK PANTHER.’ Contributors include: Kevin Feige p.g.a. (Producer), Ryan Coogler (Co-Writer/Director), Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther), Drew Petrotta (Property Master), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Nate Moore (Executive Producer), Hannah Beachler (Production Designer) and Winston Duke (M’Baku).

Special Feature: Gag Reel [2018] [1080p] [2:391] [1:38] Here is the usual obligatory gag reel that shows the stars of the film messing up their lines, dropping things and saying things not written in the script. There is nothing really noteworthy in this very short gag reel footage and would have been much better to of deleted this special feature.

Special Feature: Deleted Scenes [2018] [1080p] [2:391] [6:53] Here we get to view the following four deleted scenes and they are as follows: UN Meet and Greet; Okoye and W'Kabi Discuss the Future of Wakanda; T'Challa Remembers His Father and Voices from the Past. As usual, you can either watch each deleted scenes separately or Play All.

Special Feature: From Page to Screen: A ‘BLACK PANTHER’ Roundtable Discussion with the Writers and Filmmakers [2018] [1080p] [2.39:1/1.78:1] [20:27] Here we get to hear from everyone in the room, and talk about the origins of the characters from the Black Panther Marvel Comics and how the story was adapted for the screen. After a while I found this feature very tedious, very boring and especially very pompous rhetoric, especially when they keep stating the obvious and of course it will only be of interest to fans of the Marvel Comics. Contributors include: Christopher Priest (Writer of Black Panther Comics), Don McGregor (Writer of Black Panther Comics), Nate Moore (Executive Producer), Ta-Nehisi Coates (Writer of Black Panther Comics), Joe Robert Cole [Writer for the ‘BLACK PANTHER’ film) and Ryan Coogler (Co-Writer/Director).

(President of MARVEL STUDIOS), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Victoria Alonso (EVP, Physical Production), Stephen Broussard (Production & Development Executive of MARVEL STUDIOS), Peyton Reed (Director of ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’), Louis D’Esposito (Co-President of MARVEL STUDIOS), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), William Hurt (Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross), Nate Moore (Production & Development Executive of MARVEL STUDIOS), Taika Waititi (Director: Thor: Ragnarok), Chadwick Boesman (T’Challa/Black Panther), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Anthony Russo (Director: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’), Joe Russo (Director: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’), Stephen McFeely (Writer of ‘Avengers: Infinity War) and Christopher Markus (Writer of Avengers: Infinity War).

Special Feature: Exclusive Sneak Peek at ‘Ant-Man and The  Wasp’ [2018] [1080p] [2:39:1] [2:26] Here we take a quick behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming MARVEL STUDIOS film ‘Ant-Man and The  Wasp’ film with on-set footage and interview snippets, especially with Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/The Waso), Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym) and Peyton Reed (Director).

Audio Commentary with Director Ryan Coogler and Production Designer Hannah Beachler: First to introduce them self is Ryan Coogler and next up is Hannah Beachler, and here they are of course doing a running commentary while viewing the film ‘THE BLACK PANTHER.’ But what has really annoyed me already is Ryan Coogler, because his voice is absolutely atrocious and I wish someone would give him elocution lessons on how to speak clear and precise English, then instead of this very incoherent American accent, and on top of all that he keeps stating the obvious what we are viewing in the worst possible way. As to Hannah Beachler, who also talks in a very atrocious American accent, which I had a job to understand what she was saying, because if you are to do an audio commentary, it has to be clear and precise. When we are supposed to in London and at the Museum of Great Britain, we are informed that this building is in fact in Atlanta, but again the information relating to this part of the film gets very boring information, especially talking about the men wearing specific colour clothing, which I found very boring and not at all interested in this information. When we see the African village with Prince T’Challa walking about and the two of them meet the rhino, well we are informed that this was actually a real horse and was sued because it has the same gait as a rhino and of course with the tricks of CGI, it was turned into a rhino. Finally, this audio commentary does covers all of the usual essential run of the mill comments, as well as details beyond the basics of the shooting of the film and also in-depth information about all of the visual designs and other in-depth facts throughout the film’s audio commentary. But overall I felt three quarters of the audio commentary was a bit mumbo jumbo rhetoric rubbish and what made it was were the two people doing the audio commentary, as I had a job to understand what they were talking about and so in the end I got totally bored with what they were talking about and was in the end glad when it had all finished. I would give it a three out of ten for perseverance.

Finally, ‘BLACK PANTHER’ 3D is one of the best films to come out of the Marvel Comics Cinematic Universe and is the first MARVEL STUDIOS film to headline black superheroes and is a   remarkably entertaining superhero original story that not only pays homage to the roots of its character and especially the culture, but expertly blends the material with an especially relevant social and political message. The bonus special features definitely offer an honest look into the filmmaking process with a really excellent and informative audio commentary. And for all you dedicated fans of the Marvel Comics franchise, you can really recreate the theatrical cinema experience in your living rooms. One thing I really liked and impressed me was the first set of End Credits, which I thought they were very much in the style and homage to a James Bond film and even more impressive in the totally amazing 3D image presentation. Very Highly Recommended!
