Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: The ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ 3D [2017] film finds the universe’s most unlikely MARVEL heroes, who are back in a new action-packed Sci-Fi adventure. Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape No.2, the Sci-Fi film’s storyline continues as the team’s usual quest to traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos and The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favourite characters from the classic comics will come to our hero’s aid as the MARVEL STUDIOS Cinematic Universe continues to expand. The Sci-Fi film shares so much in common with its predecessor from the production design to the cast and creative team, but instead of feeling like a lesser re-tread of the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ 3D film, this sequel delivers more of what was so great about that first outing of the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ 3D film and takes it one step further where no man has gone before.

The action picks up soon after the events of the first ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ 3D film finished, with our space renegade heroes serving as for-hire heroes when no one else has the will, muscle or brains to do the job. They are protecting a high value asset of a gold-skinned group of aliens known as “The Sovereign.” Our story truly gets going as The Guardians successfully protect some highly sought after batteries that attracted the worst kind of interstellar scum. As they prepare to depart those high on themselves group of aliens, it becomes clear that our favourite feisty raccoon, Rocket Racoon [voiced by Bradley Cooper], has in fact stolen some of those highly sought after batteries. That immediately has our rebel heroes fighting off an armada of “The Sovereign” ships whose only goal is to see them destroyed. Out-numbered and out-gunned, it appears to be it for The Guardians when help arrives from out of nowhere.

Actually, it is not completely out of nowhere as it is the person that Peter Quill [Chris Pratt] aka “Star Lord,” has been searching for his whole life. Yep, you’ve guessed it is his Father. It is Ego [Kurt Russell] from the Living Planet, and making it into the MARVEL STUDIOS debut. Peter Quill heads off with his newly found Father, as he seeks to know more about his Dad. Meanwhile, Rocket Racoon and Baby Groot [voiced by Vin Diesel] stay behind and repair their ship that was badly damaged in that death-defying escape.

The actors in the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ 3D film themselves are, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel, who are as magnificent in this film as they were in the first film. If anything, everyone’s stepping up their game for round two, especially Michael Rooker, whose character Yondu is much more involved this time around. Kurt Russell as Ego and Pom Klementieff as Mantis are the two most notable additions to the cast of ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ 3D film that of course did not feature in the first film, but on top of all that respectively, Sylvester Stallone and Elizabeth Debicki appear also in smaller cameo supporting roles, but still manage to make a great impression.

Yondu [Michael Rooker], Kraglin [Sean Gunn] and their band of Ravagers also play an enormous role in this ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2’ 3D film instalment, even more than the first film and it is a welcomed addition, because of course it is totally enjoyable and action-packed increase in screen time for all. Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord also too is introduced and too seamlessly joins in the fun of it all. It is a very rare sequel that can succeed by adding so many new characters, expanding roles of familiar faces and further deepening our understanding of the central characters. Again, director James Gunn proves his mettle for movie magic and is rumoured that he about to pen another 1,000 words screenplay by this brilliant auteur director ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.3’ and of course no set date has been announced, but let us just say there is no better soul to be ushering The Guardians into hopefully allowing  Gamora [Zoe Saldana], Nebula [Karen Gillan], Mantis [Pom Klementieff] and villain Ayesha [Elizabeth Debicki] let loose and have as much fun as the boys have been having in the first two films, and of course another bonus would be to make another Awesome Mixtape No.3 as well. But what was also really fun time to watch is when you see all the credits roll up the screen, which people do not normally watch, well this time it is definitely a must watch, as you view some really funny goings on amongst the credits and especially watch to the very end, as you will see something quite amusing.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and MARVEL STUDIOS has teamed up to our jolly band of galaxy hero’s to a beautiful 1080p image presentation that constantly shines and definitely gives you the wow factor throughout the 3D film and also equally impressive is the 2.39:1 aspect ratio presentation. Like the first ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ Blu-ray release, one of the best aspects of the production was the vibrant and brilliant cinematography by Henry Braham (Director of Photography), who has perfectly and faithfully captures this brash comic-book style. The contrast aspect of the film provides a comfortably bright and glowing presentation with sparkling brilliant whites throughout. Shadow details remain really good, exposing the tiniest of objects and detail within the darkest of shadows. Facial complexions beneath the makeup appear natural lifelike textures. So all in all the 3D high-definition presentation is totally awesome!

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and MARVEL STUDIOS give us an equally awesome 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio presentation that will sure to rock the house with several demo-worthy moments to impress any visitors. There a two specific moments in the film that immediately stand out are the Guardians' escape from the Sovereign's drone fleet and the savagely brutal fight between Nebula and Gamora on Ego's planet and in each of these scenes, the surrounds really come alive as the small spaceships zoom in every which way direction and flawlessly appear from back speakers to the front speakers seamlessly. Also other very dramatic audio presentations are when all the ships fly all around and blast with rapid gunfire are discretely heard throughout all the speakers, and so fully immersing the listener into the thick of battle. Quieter scenes come with subtle ambient sound effects, generating and maintaining a terrifically satisfying 360 degrees surround sound presentation, exhibiting superb detailing and clarity all round, keeping the action playful and highly engaging with effective off-screen activity. So all in all this is once again a top notch sound presentation, like you heard in the first ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ Blu-ray release and a worthy edition to your Galaxy Collection.

2D Blu-ray Special Features and Extras:

Audio Commentary by Director James Gunn: James Gunn says a big HELLO, and informs us that he is the writer and director of the film ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ and a film James spent nearly three working on the film, and this audio commentary by James Gunn informs us was recorded as the Vol.2 film has just been released in the cinema, and is very proud of this Vol.2 film, and is a continuous story of ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.1,’ but with this Vol.2 film we go much deeper into the characters, and to know more them much better. James Gunn informs us that the start of the film is actual set in Saint Charles in Missouri to be exact,  and not far from where James Gunn grew up in reality and  had a really wonderful time growing up, and says he relates to the Star-Lord character quite a bit. The car, that we see in a simulated Kurt Russell driving an actual 1979 Ford (USA) Mustang Cobra and James Gunn informs us that the number plate on the car is the same number plat James Gunn had on his very own Buick Electra car he had when he attended High School. James Gunn informs us that the film ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ takes place in real time two months after the last film finished, that is why James Gunn makes Baby Groot only a couple of months old when we see them at the start of the film battling with the inter-dimensional monster who is after eating the special alien batteries and we also find out that this scene was actually the first day of shooting the film. When you see Baby Groot dancing, we are informed that this is James dancing and was captured on a secret film no one has seen, but of course James was captured computer capture imaging facility, and also James Gunn informs us this scene with Baby Groot dancing was the most complicated filming procedure ever and there were in fact well over 4,000 Iterative reconstruction algorithms used to reconstruct 2D and 3D images in certain imaging techniques of this one very long shot and was one of the biggest effect shots ever undertaken and praises Chris Townsend [Effects Supervisor] for all of his brilliant work on this one particular scene in the film. James Gunn informs us that the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ film is mainly centred on the story of Per Quill aka Star-Lord seeking out his real Father and was also a more protagonist aspect of the scenario of the films premise. When the spaceship crash lands on the Planet Berhert, this was in fact filmed on one of the largest film sound stage available. When you see the camp fire scene with Kurt Russell and the other characters, well James Gunn insisted on a couple of week’s rehearsal to  get the scene just right and to stick to the script 100%. James informs us that all the pop songs used in the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ film was very important and was given 100% clearance from the copyright people, and when James Gunn was compiling the list, he had in fact over 500 song titles to choose from, that Peter Quill’s mother would put on his personal mixed tapes. But most important, James Gunn would put all the songs used throughout the film onto a Compact Disc, play a particular song when shooting a specific scene in the film and most importantly all the actors and crew would hearing aid bud in their ear so everyone can react to the song being played. When we are back with the damaged spaceship that is being repaired by Rocket Racoon, and James Gunn mentions the Glen Campbell song being played, was one of his favourite song when he was a young child, and James also mentions that he was very lucky to be invited to a 4th July Party not long ago and actually met his song hero Glenn Campbell not long after he sadly passed away. James Gunn comments a lot about scenes where there is a lot of talking, compared to what happened in the first film, and James Gunn wanted the Vol.2 film to be much more character driven film, so you really get to find out more about the characters. When you see Gamora [Zoe Saldana] sitting on the ground on her own, James Gunn informs us that this was inspired by the Alfred Hitchcock film ‘North By Northwest,’ where her angry sister Nebula comes at her and strife’s with all the firepower in order to kill her. With the rest of the audio commentary, James Gunn just goes on about all the characters and why wanted then to be portrayed in a certain throughout the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ film and how in the end they all come together as a family. We also get a lot of technical details how certain scenes were shot  and also how all the technical effects were achieved and what he wanted the film to look like. As we get to where the credits start to roll up the screen, James Gunn informs us that it is always great to be at a MARVEL STUDIOS film screening in the cinema, because fans of the MARVEL STUDIOS films always stay right to the very end of the credits than any other film, especially looking out for the post credit scenes, as James Gunn thinks they are always very funny and informs us there is actually five you view. James Gunn gives great praise to WETA DIGITAL LIMITED, who he feels did a fantastic job with all the digital effects and animation and especially EGO’s Planet. As we near the end of the credits, James Gunn thanks everyone and especially the people at Burbank for all their hard work on the film and also thanks us for staying right throughout the audio commentary. This is definitely a five star rating audio commentary.

Special Feature: BONUS ROUND: The Making of ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ [2017] [1080p] [1.78:1] [37:39] Here you get to view five individual special features looking at various aspects of the production from the director's creative style, the role music plays throughout both films, the production special FX visual effects, also there is a great deal of discussions on the chemistry of what happened between the cast and crew. We also get a lot of clips from Vol.1 and Vol.2 films, also lots of rare behind-the-scene filming of all the tricks of the trade. Also we get to see some absolutely fantastic brilliant and stunning colourful are illustrations by Anthony Francisco, who was the actual Visual Development Concept Illustrator for the film. Contributors include: Kevin Feige, p.g.a. [Producer], Jame Gunn [Director/Producer], Bradley Cooper [Voice of Rocket], Chris Pratt [Peter Quill/Star-Lord], Christopher Townsend [Visual Effects Supervisor], Nikolas Korda [Executive Producer], Jonathan Schwartz [Executive Producer], Zoe Saldana [Gamora], Dave Bautista [Drax], Michael Rooker [Yonou], Victoria Alonso [Executive Producer], Scott Chambliss [Production Designer], Andy Park [Visual Development Supervisor], Louis D’Esposito [Executive Producer], Russell Bobbitt [Property Master], Chris Sullivan [Taserface], Sean Gunn [Kraglin/On Set Rocket], Kurt Russell [Ego], Karen Gillan [Nebula], Pom Klementieff [Mantis], Elizabeth Debicki [Ayesha] and Vin Diesal [Voice of Baby Groot]. So here are the four special features you get to view: In The Director’s Chair With James Gunn, REUNION TOUR: The Music of ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2;’ LIVING PLANETS AND TALKING TREES: The VFX of Vol.2 and SHOWTIME: The Cast of Vol.2.

Special Feature: Music Video: The Seepers Feat. David “Zardu” Hasselhoff and Guardians Inferno for the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ [2017] [1080i] [1.37:1] [3:35] Dust off those far out platform shoes and enjoy this blast from the past! Here we view The Sneepers perform the song “Guardians Inferno” in a surprisingly funny, 100% camp retro-style music video that features the voice and performance of David “Zardu” Hasselhoff and if this is right up your street, well this definitely your cup of tea and is a right hoot. The music video features aliens dancing in front of wonderfully tacky, space-themed backdrops and complete with out-of-this-world costumes and choreography. David “Zardu” Hasselhoff ends the video with one simple request: “Just remember, in these times of hardship: We Are Groot.” The video was directed by David Yarovesky, who James Gunn called out on social media. “The idea was mine, but the execution was all his,” the direct James Gunn wrote. Watch right to the end, as we get a cameo appearance of the infamous Stan Lee.

Special Feature: Gag Reel [2017] [1080p] [1.78:1] [3:41] With this short special feature, see Sly Stallone has one heck of a time trying to say “Raveger” or is it “Ravenger”? Hear Kurt Russell keep on saying Star Wars instead of Star-Lord. To me some of it was well over the top crass stupidity, especially with Chris Pratt really over doing it with his so called funny larking about and false laughing mode, and after a while it starts to get on ones nerve and eventually it is not at all funny. Also you see all the other actors trying to be very funny; but to me as a Brit I felt it was totally stupid American humour of the worst kind.

Special Feature: Deleted Scenes [2017] [1080p] [1.78:1] [5:00] Here we get to view four deleted scenes, which consist of Adolescent Groot Extended Scene; Memorial to the War on Xandar, Kraglin and Quill Talk Tunes and Mantis and Drax Feel The Sadness Extended Scene. As usual, you can either watch them separately or Play All.

SNEAK PEEK: ‘THOR: RAGNAROK’ [2017] [1080p] [2.39:1] [1:53]

BONUS: You get a brilliant designed embossed slip cover that makes it a must own addition for your ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY' 3D Blu-ray disc Collection.

Finally, the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ 3D film is to my mind the ultimate sweet eye-candy presentation, plus you get to a heartfelt exploration of how friends in your life might be as or more important than blood relatives. Even though to some critics the story wasn’t earth-shaking enough for their liking, but to my mind you will be totally and utterly massively entertained by the cast and especially the colourful, imaginative CGI special effects and even the wonderful Baby Groot is his own wonderful attraction. Ultimately, the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ 3D film is a great deal of enormous fun, expertly crafted blockbuster and definitely a worthy follow-up to the previous ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ film definitely one of my favourites in the Sci-Fi genre. To a lot of critics they did not find it very ground-breaking in the way that the first film was for them, still what do these idiots know, but if you loved the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’ film as I did, then I can guarantee you will not find much to complain about the ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol.2’ 3D film. This totally amazing 3D Blu-ray + 2D Blu-ray set is certainly worth adding to your collection, especially of this type of Sci-Fi genre, and definitely gets a five star rating from me! Very Highly Recommended!
