A New Story From The Fairy Tales of Shrek!

Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star on his grandest quest yet. With only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: Kitty Softpaws. They are joined in their journey by a chatty and cheerful mutt named Perro. Together, our trio of heroes will need to stay one step ahead of the fairy tale realm’s craftiest crooks including Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

FILM FACT: In November 2012, executive producer Guillermo del Toro shared director Chris Miller's intentions to take the titular character on an adventure to a “very exotic locale.” Guillermo del Toro also said a couple of drafts for the screenplay were completed. In April 2014, voice actor Antonio Banderas said work on the sequel had begun. On June 12, 2014, the movie was originally entitled ‘Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves.’ In March 2015, Antonio Banderas said the script was under restructuring. Antonio Banderas also hinted at the possibility of Shrek appearing in the film. By November 2018, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri had been brought on board as an executive producer of both ‘Shrek 5’ and ‘Puss in Boots 2.’ In February 2019, it was reported that Bob Persichetti was set to direct the film while Latifa Ouaou, producer of the first film, would oversee the development of the sequel with Chris Meledandri; Bob Persichetti and Latifa Ouaou previously worked on the first film as head of story and producer, respectively. On August 19, 2020, DreamWorks trademarked ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ as the new title of the sequel, which was approved in December 2020. In March 2021, Joel Crawford replaced Persichetti as director, having previously helmed DreamWorks' ‘The Croods: A New Age’ (2020), with producer Mark Swift, editor James Ryan, and screenwriter Paul Fisher returning as collaborators along with Januel Mercado serving as the film's co-director. Along with Salma Hayek (now credited as Salma Hayek Pinault) reprising her voice role, new cast members were announced in March 2022, including Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, Wagner Moura, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Anthony Mendez.

Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ [2023] takes audiences on a wild ride through a land of magic and mystery as the titular character goes on a journey to reclaim his nine lives. Puss in Boots is voiced by Antonio Banderas (‘The Mask of Zorro’), the animated film is a visual masterpiece with a stunningly beautiful and unique design that perfects the storybook-in-three-dimensions style that began with 2001’s ‘Shrek.’ It is a work of art that should be watched if for no other reason than to lose yourself in its wonderful magical ambiance.

Boasting fun and engaging vocal performances that are artfully brought to life by DreamWorks Animation animators, ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ will keep audiences of all ages involved and totally entertained. That being said, it is neither a perfect film, nor a perfect film for children. The filmmakers made a number of inappropriate choices for a children’s show that will jolt some viewers out of the moment. Furthermore, the far more interesting storyline of an aging swashbuckling hero who has never given his own mortality a second thought, now finding himself literally running from and confronting the physical manifestation of death is relegated to a secondary position. Instead, what has become fairly standard fair in the last few years, the much-overplayed hero must acknowledge his selfishness and learn that friendship is worth more than laurels heaped upon him is the focus of this wonderful animated feature film.

However, the violence, which might not really be very appropriate for the very young, is of course totally fictional while the cursing is very real, even if the situation in which it is being used is fictional. So let’s talk about the violence, virtually all of the most violent interactions happen just off screen. But none of the fighting violence in ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ is fairly comical and not at all on the level of being real, Puss in Boots reactions to the violence and his palpable level of fear he is being threatened upon is made visceral brought to you by the incredibly skilled professional animators and sound artists, and again it might be too much for a younger audience.

Puss in Boots has always been portrayed as a charming braggadocio aka boastful or arrogant behaviour, but Puss in Boots has also always been the best of the best and a bit of a scoundrel and rascal, especially in his own animated feature films. In those, Puss in Boots has to some degree been upstaged or put down by a female counterpart. I thought that ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ did a totally brilliant and thrilling job in keeping the two relatively aspect of his personality very well balanced, but in all instances when one of them must come out on top in skill and intellect and it seems to us at the moment the female character has outdone Puss in Boots, but in time there is of course collaboration between Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws.

Unlike the Disney Animation classics, DreamWorks Animation doesn't have that many memorable villains at the moment, but in ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ arguably we get the best produced yet so far. Seemingly just a bounty hunter out for Puss in Boots in the guise of the Big Bad Wolf [Wagner Moura] who is always hot on Puss in Boots tail and a constant pain in the neck. Big Bad Wolf is to especially young children legitimately terrifying – even more so when his true nature is revealed, and that is largely thanks to some great character design by the brilliant professional animators. Puss in Boots won't be the only one quaking in his boots every time the Big Bad Wolf shows up.

The other characters, friends and foes, also make their mark too. Kitty Softpaws [Salma Hayek] makes a return and self-proclaimed therapy dog Perrito [Harvey Guillen] joins Puss in Boots on his long journey, with both providing great hilarity, lots of laughs and heart in equal measure. Goldilocks [Florence Pugh] and the Three Bears [Samson Kayo, Olivia Coleman and Ray Winstone] are after the Wishing Star also, but have their own meaningful subplot. Jack Horner [John Mulaney] is a more generic adversary but makes up for it with big laughs and creative tools in his magical arsenal that light up the screen in the animated feature film's many set amazing pieces.

‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ is definitely 100% their best ever looking animated feature film to date. The overall design is reminiscent of those wonderful fairy-tale paintings and illustrations in the wonderful fairy tale books for children, but it is amazingly brought to life with an explosion of amazing spectacular colour. With wonderful lush, vivid visuals contrast well against the Big Bad Wolf's darkness whenever he appears on screen. Below the surface are very clever choices in the setting and locations the cast of characters travel through, as they take advantage of the bright wonderful brilliant colour palette whilst also leading to amazing creative action sequences throughout out the animated feature film ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ in bringing everything together in this compelling wonderful heart-warming story. ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ doesn't look down on its presumably young audience, diving head first into themes of death and existential dread. Of course it delivers a totally optimistic message, in saying “Make the most out of the one life we have.” There are other narrative sayinga and themes at play also, like loneliness, narcissism, family and of course trust, but they are all seamlessly brought to the screen throughout the core theme throughout the storyline and its strong messages of hope throughout the animated feature film ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH,’ which of course includes Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaw and of course little petit Perrito.

‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ totally exceeds my expectations by quite a bit. It will keep adults and young children on the edge of their seats with thrilling action sequences throughout the animated feature film, get loads of big laughs, terrifying villains and a heart-warming story. ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ is totally excellent, perhaps the most exciting outcome of this project is that this new stylised of animation direction is definitely here to stay for DreamWorks Animation. If it does, maybe DreamWorks Animation studio can give Disney, even Sony Pictures Animation a very good run for their money.

But now you have read my in-depth synopsis of this amazing animated feature film ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ so of course one should now really checkout out the in-depth information about each of the main wonderful unique characters in the DreamWorks Animation movie, so please check out the following information and really get into all the wonderful main unique characters in the amazing and wonderful ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ so happy reading folks and enjoy!

PUSS IN BOOTS: Puss in Boots is a wonderful hero to some, an outlaw to others, but everyone agrees that this swashbuckling pussy cat has real style to spare! Known for his iconic and beautifully cobbled boots, Puss in Boots is also a brave fighter, a skilled swordsman, and a crazy-good dancer. After his latest epic adventure Puss in Boots has burned through eight of his feline nine lives and loses his mojo, but when he learns of the fabled fallen Wishing Star, Puss in Boots sees one last chance to reclaim his legendary lifestyle and totally springs into action.

KITTY SOFTPAWS: Kitty Softpaws has totally artful moves; quick wits and soft touch that makes Kitty Softpaws a cat thief without equal. Kitty Softpaws legitimate skills in the fight department too, which makes her a really good thing she does because this feisty feline is quick to take on all comers, especially Puss in Boots.

PERRITTO: Perrito is a tiny, tea-cup mutt, and a street dog who is in no way streetwise. Perrito never had a home and has never been given a name, but Perrito remains relentlessly upbeat, accepting adversity with unflagging grace and good humour. Even when things seem their darkest, this happy chatterbox is looking for the silver lining, especially when Perrito teams up with Puss in Boots and Kitty Soaftpaw.

GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREEBEARS: Goldilocks is the little orphan girl of Three Bears fame is now a teenager and an adopted member of the bear family. Raised in the wild, Goldilocks is feisty, feral and has a bear-level type bad temper. Mama Bear is sentimental, family- focused, and the glue that holds the three Bear clan together, while Papa Bear is a tough, old-school bear of few words. As for Baby Bear, he’s big, ridiculously strong and plainly not a baby. Truth be known is that Baby Bear’s wits aren’t too sharp, but his sense of smell is, and that comes in very handy, especially hunting out Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaw and Perrito on their long journey to also grab the Magic Map before the other three characters.

BIG BAD WOLF: Big Bad Wolf is unlike any opponent to Puss in Boots has ever faced before. Huge, imposing, and lightning fast, Big Bad Wolf is devastating in battle and relentless in pursuit of course Puss in Booots, with his long-held grudge drives his insatiable appetite for the last of Puss in Boots nine lives.

MAMA LUNA: Mama Luna is Electric but big-hearted, Mama Luna is a cat fancier who takes in strays and nurtures them with love and kindness. Her home is a sanctuary for hundreds upon hundreds of cats–among them, the recently retired Puss in Boots, whom she renames “Pickles” and favours him with bubble baths. Despite being terribly near-sighted, Mama Luna is willing to go to the wire when it comes to protecting her “babies” from danger.

JACK HORNER: Big Jack Horner never had the advantages that the other fairy-tale celebrities to enjoy... Jack Horner’s not magical, Jack Horner’s not royalty, Jack Horner’s not a cool enchanted personality with the gift of the gab. Jack Horner’s personality is made up for this by stealing every magical object he can get his hands on. Jack Horner has an armoury full of famous fairy- tale artefacts and powerful magic weapons, and Jack Horner’s not shy about using them.

Mecardo [Co-Director] who are here to talk about the animated feature film ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH,’ and they mention that it is at least 11 years since this animated character Puss in Boots last appeared on the screen, and they also say it feels that we are a very lucky team in bringing back that beloved cat character back, and to think there are a group of people who were not born when the character Puss in Boots appeared in the first ‘Shrek’ animated movie, and there are other audiences who have been waiting a long time to see Puss in Boots back on the big screen, and they say they wanted to present the animated feature film as a classic Fairy Story. ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ is introduced as a life and death scenario and also look like a rock star coming out to perform in front of an excited crowd and loves to live the party life, and they all say they love the uplifting song “FEARLESS HERO” that Puss in Boots sings at the start of the animated film and they also give great praise to the amazing composer Heitor Pereira who orchestrated the song also so well, and because Puss in Boots is totally oblivious to his death, he is totally fearless of any danger, but unfortunately we see the church bell fall on him and ends up in a sort of heaven, which Puss in Boots does not realise, and meets some sort of Witch Doctor or something similar, but they all say we really enjoy watching what Puss in Boots gets up to still not realising he is dead, and they all start to talk about how he eight lives were used up and evolved, and we see Puss in Boots is given a card to seek out someone to help him get his ninth life back. This is where the fun journey starts to begin for Puss in Boots and his first stop is a bar lapping up some milk, and the Big Bad Wolf is sitting next to him out of the blue, to give Puss in Boots a big chance to challenge the Big Bad Wolf, and they all say the character of the Big Bad Wolf is based on a Charles Bronson character as “Harmonica” the vengeful drifter Arizona, circa 1875 film ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ [1968]. At chapter 4, we see Puss in Boots has buried his outfit in front of Mama Luna’s home and we see Puss in Boots being brought into the house by Mama Luna and Puss in Boots is totally shocked with the hundreds of cats there starring at him and feeling oh not another cat, and now we see Puss in Boots is totally shocked when he finally sees how many cats are in the house, then we see Puss in Boots being scrubbed in the soap fill bath by Mama Luna and names him “Pickles” which of course he is not at all pleased with, but all the other cats show their displeasure towards Puss in Boots in a very unfriendly way in being added with the other multitude of other cats. At chapter 5 we now get introduced to Goldilocks and her three bears trying to track down the elusive Puss in Boots and they say the voice cast were totally amazing and of course praise Florence Pugh for Goldilocks, Olivia Colman for Mama Bear and Ray Winstone for Papa Bear, and they say that Olivia Colman and Ray Winstone are even more cherished in the United Kingdom and especially Ray Winstone is even more cherished by the British public for the characters he plays in British TV series as well as Olivia Colman and they say we have also got two Royal Family actors from British television for this animated feature film. At chapter 8 they talk about the character Jack Horner who they say is a very well-known nursery thyme, and they also say the voice actor John Mahoney as the voice character is totally brilliant and they feel so honoured to have him, as he was so totally perfect for the voice of Jack Horner. When we see Puss in Boots opens the wood casket and finds he has been looking for the Magic Map so he can finally get his extra ninth life back, and when Puss in Boots opened up the wooden casket Kitty Softpaws leaps out and they say that cat is voiced by the amazing Salma Hayek Pinault, which they praise her for her voice character. Now Kitty Softpaws and Puss in Boots have the Magic Map and it is the start of their long journey together and they say the Magic Map is real cool and they also say it is giving them relevant clues on their journey to their final destination. We are now at chapter 16 and Puss in Boots has escaped and is talking to 8 different images of himself on large upright glass panels and they are talking to him about his life so far, and now the commentators talk about Puss in Boots character of being like a Rock Star and saying, “What is the downside of being a Rock Star,” they say you are without your family, on the road all the time but is fun when you play at a gig, but it is very lonely out there, and now Puss in Boots has escaped on a horse and he is all on his own now, and they also say that we are trying to show that Puss in Boots life is great, but in reality it is not and again he is again missing something in reality in his life. At chapter 16 Puss in Boots is now starting out with the Magic Map and suddenly the Big Bad Wolf has stalked him and appears in front of him to threaten his life, and they all say they love the evil dialogue of the Big Bad Wolf, but as Puss in Boots runs away in fear, even though Kitty Softpaw and the mutt Perrito is offering to help Puss in Boots in trouble, but at 1:16:14 Puss in Boots comes to gaze upon the Mythical Magic Star that the Magic Map has been giving them clues where to find it on their journey, and they all say that doing the Mythical Magic Star was extremely very difficult thing to achieve to give a good balance, because it has so many layers to make it look like real glass. Then we see Goldilocks and the Three Bears turn up nearing the Mythical Magic Star and we hear Goldilocks talking to the Three Bears in saying they are her family she has always wanted in a very emotional way and the Three Bears are taken aback by what she has said, but the commentators talk about the distinct voices of Ray Winston and Olivia Coleman in saying that when they pitched the story to Ray Winston and in the moment it was Ray Winston’s reaction that clinched the deal in them both wanting to be in the animated film and again they say that is another example of the actors inform so much towards the characters point of view and in the wording process as well and so they say we just had to have those voices in the animated movie, and when Mama Bear talks to Goldilocks, the commentators feels what we are watching is heart breaking and they also think Olivia Coleman really nailed it and with the animators and they say it really breaks their hearts with all the emotions that went in that particular scene in the animated movie. At chapter 18 we get to see the massive fight to the death between the Big Bad Wold and Puss in Boots and they all say that we are seeing an amazing fight sequence and it has been taken up to the next level by the amazing animator team, and we suddenly see Puss in Boots gets the upper hand over the Big Bad Wolf who has suddenly called a truce and decides to walk away in honour and admiration of Puss in Boots determination to how he stood up against the Big Bad Wolf and now Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaw and Perrito can now carry on with their journey to their final destination, and in a short while is where we see Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaw and Perrito have finally found their journeys ends as a family and this is what Puss in Boots has wanted in real life and the commentators say that watching them sitting there looking up at the stars is a really beautiful shot and again reminisce and talk basically about the start of the animated movie and we think the animated movie is over and we hey the impression that we have come to the end of the animated movie, but the audio commentary carries on, and we now get to see that someone has stolen his very important ship from the harbour and is totally furious and of course it that dastardly duo Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws and Perrito really laughing in what they have achieved and now they are off on another journey and to a new destination and of course adventures, and the commentators say what we see is so beautiful, especially the wonderful lighting of the sky and as the ship nears land, we see the big wording FAR FAR AWAY. But they say ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ is that it is connected to a bigger world and just to remind our audience, we see a greater adventure with Puss in Boots and hanging out with his two other close buddies in future adventures and little teaser when we get to see with the wording FAR FAR AWAY. They all comment on the wonderful end credits and say how beautiful they look. They also say we are blessed with the beautiful songs throughout the animated feature film and that it has all been a great deal of fun, especially with our wonderful professional team in how we have celebrated life and especially with Puss in Boots and his two wonderful companions Kitty Softpaws and Perrito who are now family to Puss in Boots. They also say they are thankful for all the great song “FEARLESS HERO” heard at the start of the animated feature film ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH,’ but even more they say that they love the remix version of “FEARLESS HERO” heard with the end credits. But now as we get to near the very end of the end credits, they all say to us, “Thank you everyone for the journey with us, and it is the dedicated team now signing off.”

Finally, ‘PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’ [2022 / 2023] is easily one of the biggest animated feature film surprises for everyone, which no one for sure anybody expected the revelation that happened and also the phenomenon that also happened with a very bold adventurous furry Puss in Boots cat. But the animated feature film also manages to convey messages of selflessness and especially teamwork in a way that doesn’t feel heavy-handed or cloying. And the stellar voice performances and dazzling visuals keep things so engaging you won’t need a laser pointer or a catnip-stuffed mouse toy to entertain you. It comes to this Blu-ray disc with a pretty astonishing picture presentation and an awesome audio track. There are loads of surprising well done and interesting extras paired with some good kid friendly activities. This latest Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation Blu-ray release is a definite wonderful pick me up for years to come and especially for the whole family! Very Highly Recommended!
