Andrew’s Blu-ray 3D Review: With the film animation ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D [2007] we find that when Shrek and Princess Fiona finally got married and dealing with his in-laws in ‘Shrek 2,’ the big green ogre's life takes the natural next step in this third film, as Shrek [Mike Myers] grows up to become a man. Part of that is facing his potential role as the next king of Far Far Away, as Princess Fiona [Cameron Diaz] finds out her father the King [John Cleese] is gravely ill, and the other part is facing his potential role as a father, as Fiona wants kids. But Shrek wants no part of that, and instead ships off with his pals Puss in Boots [Antonio Banderas] and Donkey [Eddie Murphy], have to kill two birds with one stone, by going on a long trip to find another heir to the throne, in the form of Arthur Pendragon [Justin Timberlake], a geeky young teenager who also wants no part of being King.

Unfortunately for the people of Far Far Away, there is someone who wants to be king, and it's Prince Charming [Rupert Everett], whose been reduced to performing in dinner theatre following his mother's plot to take over in ‘Shrek 2.’ Bringing together all of the fairy-tale villains who have been wronged by the fine folk of Far Far Away, Prince Charming puts in motion a plan to take over the defenceless kingdom. Arthur Pendragon trip doesn't really result in much of anything, and the Prince Charming storyline only delivers at the end. Part of the problem is an inherently unfunny plot, centres around death and responsibility, two topics that don't lend themselves to belly laughs.

In the end, ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ is like an all-star game. The best in the business get together to have some fun, the fans get to see the big names they love, and the whole event is familiar, safe for the young children and a nice diversion for a night. The phrase all-star is perfect, as the voice cast for this film is incredible. Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy is a great pair once again, while Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas are deal of fun in limited roles. Rupert Everett's return to the line-up makes Prince Charming more enjoyable than he should be, as does Julie Andrews as Princess Fiona's mum. And of course, everyone's favourite gingerbread man comes back for more, to get in a couple of pastry-based sight gags.

The addition of Justin Timberlake as the boy who would be King is neither important nor negative, as Justin Timberlake doesn't get a lot to do besides whine, and provide a good reason to introduce Merlin [Eric Idle] with great gusto. Ultimately, with few key scenes, Merlin, whose considerable comedic chops are wasted, is well overshadowed by the hilarious princesses, voiced by four very funny ladies: Amy Poehler [Snow White], Cheri Oteri [Sleeping Beauty], Amy Sedaris [Cinderella] and Maya Rudolph [Rapunzel]. Amy Poehler deserves a spin-off of her own, as her bitchy princess is a fun alternate take on the legend, and she gets one of the film's most memorable moments.

But then, even Larry King as Doris gets more prime material than Justin Timberlake in this movie, getting a couple of funny lines of his own. The only new big name with less reason to be in the film than Justin Timberlake is John Krasinski as Lancelot. Also missed is Regis Philban as Mabel, Ian McShane as Captain Hook and Seth Rogan as the Ship’s Captain. With so much star power and so little good material and story to go around, it's easy for an actor to fade into the background and for a film to fade as well.

What saves ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ is the fantastic computer animation. PIXAR gets a great deal of credit as a leader in this field, but DreamWorks has pretty much cornered the market on animating real humans, delivering characters that look and move almost as real as any Hollywood actor. Looking at the detail in this film makes you wonder what they could possibly do next, and hope that it'll be “come up with a story as creative and entertaining as the first ‘Shrek’ animated film.”

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – DreamWorks Animation presents us ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ with this totally brilliant animated film in a stunning 1080p Technicolor 3D image presentation and equally impressive is the 1.78:1 aspect ratio that really enhances the 3D images you view is so spectacular and it is just like “Real 3D” and you feel you are totally involved with the animated film, especially with all the characters. Given the recent nature of the clean-up, the results are nothing short of jaw dropping beautiful, and especially the main colours that really stood out for me were the main colours like the reds, green, blue, brown and mauve, but overall the other spectrum of colours you get to view are truly outstanding and vibrant. On top of all that the image quality is as good as you would get with a brand new CGI computer generated animated film. This ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D Blu-ray images pop out off the screen in a really spectacular way, that also gives you an amazing depth of field, and makes this ‘SHREK’ 3D Blu-ray is a truly classic demonstration material that will make all your visitors see this animated film in a brand new way compared to if you could watch it in the 2D image presentation, but for me personally I really prefer the brilliant 3D images that really enhances this brilliant animated film. Please Note: Playback Region B/2: This will not play on most Blu-ray players sold in North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. 3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – DreamWorks Animation brings us an awesome spectacular presentation DreamWorks Animation brings us ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D with an awesome  spectacular presentation of the 7.1 Dolby TrueHD Audio experience, especially when you get the upbeat well known songs you hear throughout the animated film. You get the experience of all the speakers getting a really good workout and especially the rear speakers that is flawlessly brilliant, that really generates a cheerful soundscape that is so wonderfully enveloping all around you and makes you feel part of the animated film, as well as experiencing the discrete sounds of wildlife when the music is in its quieter mode, that really enhances all of the sound field to highly-satisfying audio effect. Channel separation and movement is very well-balanced, creating an expansive image across the screen in a very convincing way. Dynamics and acoustics sound effects are surprisingly extensive with clean mid to upper levels, and low-bass provides accurate weight and punch to the action as well as the song selections. So all in all this is a totally excellent effort on the part of DreamWorks Pictures SKG Animation and everyone involved in this brilliant animated film should be totally congratulated in their professional production values.

Finally, ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D [2007] with this third instalment of the Shrek franchise, though there are a few impressive moments, including the climactic castle invasion, and the film's technological quality is outstanding. I couldn't wait to see ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D and especially since I have such a great love for the second Shrek animated film, and I am just in love with Puss in Boots. ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D has great jokes, terrific animation, and lovable characters, especially the character Merlin was just a terrific spoof. But the characters seemed to be lacking the same chemistry as they did in the first two Shrek films. ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D is another entertaining romp through the erstwhile Hollywood of Far Far Away with a few laughs for adults and a few more for kids. Like all of the films in this series, it has a big and good heart, and occasionally pays homage in poking fun at modern films, but unlike the previous films, however, ‘SHREK THE THIRD’ 3D is not a source of non-stop hilarity, and contains a little more thematic content. But overall the quality of the Blu-ray disc looks and sounds totally fantastic. Highly Recommended!
