SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY [2021] [Limited Edition SteelBook] [Blu-ray + 4K Ultra HD] [UK Release] Even More Ingenious Blend of Live-Action Comedy and Cutting-Edge Animation!

Welcome to the Jam! NBA champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Looney Tune Bugs Bunny with the animated/live-action event ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ from director Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter.

This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids. When LeBron James and his young son Dom James are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I. entitled Al-G Rhythm [Don Cheadle], LeBron James must get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the Al-G. Rhythm’s A.I. digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before.

It’s Looney Tunes versus “Goon Squad” in the highest-stakes challenge of his life that will redefine LeBron James’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Looney Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” LeBron James by playing the game their own way.

FILM FACT: Appearances via archive footage include Mike Myers, Seth Green and Robert Wagner as Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Scott Evil and Number Two, respectively from the Austin Powers franchise; Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund from Casablanca); and Josh Helman as Slit from ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.’ In addition to voicing and providing motion capture for the Goon Squad, Davis, Lillard, Thompson, Ogwumike and Taurasi appear as themselves in live-action cameos. Looney Tunes characters who appear in non-speaking roles include Wile E. Coyote, Gossamer, K-9, Charlie Dog, The Three Bears, The Crusher, Witch Hazel, Sam Sheepdog, Rocky and Mugsy, Playboy Penguin and Nasty Canasta. Penelope Pussycat was present in the film's merchandising and advertising as part of the Looney Tune Squad, but was not included in the film's finished version. The Nerdlucks, the former antagonists of the original film, appear as spectators during the game via archive footage. James confirmed prior to its release that their Monstars forms would not appear in the film.

Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ [2021] is a fun popcorn film for all the family this summer. It packs in comedic beats, over the top Looney Tunes chaos, and even some wonderful few heart-warming moments throughout the film.

Much like the 1996 film, ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ begins by introducing King James as a young boy struggling to balance life and basketball. Then it quickly progresses through his career until it reaches modern day. LeBron James and his Dom James [Cedric Joe] do not see eye to eye. Dom James wants to code video games like his innovative “Dom Ball” while LeBron James is focused on basketball and not “fun.” In an attempt to connect with his son, LeBron James brings his son Dom James along with him to a meeting at Warner Bros. There he is presented with the Warner 3000, an innovative way to insert LeBron James into every IP Warner Bros. owns.

But when LeBron James turns down Warner Bros., and essentially calls the A.I.'s idea stupid things go awry. The offended computer, Al-G Rhythm [Don Cheadle] traps Dom James and LeBron James in the Server. In order to escape, LeBron James has to win at a game of basketball against Al-G Rhythm's team of enhanced NBA and WNBA superstars. Together with Bugs Bunny, LeBron James rounds up a team of everyone's favourite Looney Tunes to once again play for their lives.

‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ is not quite a sequel or a reboot, it falls somewhere in the middle which seems appropriate for the Loony Tunes themselves. It is a nostalgic, hilarious, Looney Tunes good time. And while it feels and sometimes looks like an advertisement for Warner Bros IP, it is a film that the whole family can enjoy watching together.

‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ commits itself to having a more detailed plot than its predecessor, while also pointing out this all sounds familiar. It manages to stick to the story it is telling while also allowing room to go completely nuts. More than once viewers are reminded why they loved Bugs and his pals growing up, the utter randomness that occurs when these characters are on screen.

There is no shortage of Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros, and DC comic’s characters to spot throughout the runtime. The basketball game has so many; each viewing will have you seeing characters you missed every other time. However, the main tunes are who steal the show. Classic gags abound along with newly adapted hijinks that fit into current Warner Bros properties, like Granny with her Matrix moves. One of my favourite scenes happened when they all were going wild as poor LeBron James tried to get them to hustle up and listen to his instructions and the Looney Tunes inform LeBron James, “Sorry Doc, the tunes don't do serious.”

One of the insane controversies around this film was Lola Bunny's new look. After re-watching the 1996 ‘Space Jam’ ahead of ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ and anyone who has a problem with Lola Bunny being desexualized can go to Moron Mountain. Yes, Lola Bunny had an iconic line in the original and she was the second best player on the team. But Lola Bunny was also drawn like Jessica Rabbit and treated like nothing more than something pretty to look at. Also, no female plays basketball in a tube top and booty shorts. In the new film, Lola Bunny is still the second best player and she is wearing an outfit that is more like everyone else's. Nothing wrong with that and I appreciate Warner Bros. fixing that for this outing.

With so many characters and actors like Don Cheadle carrying the film did not rest on LeBron James's shoulders, which I felt suited the film fine. LeBron James even grumbles how athletes and acting never goes well. In fact his basketball persona becomes a joke, even to himself. Whereas in the original 1996 film ‘Space Jam,’ Michael Jordan didn't allow room for any of this demeanour to become a joke.

‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ also aims to tug a bit at parental emotions and it succeeds. The heart-warming times happen when LeBron James puts down the crown of King James and is just a dad. Like the rest of us, he has his championship moments and also plenty of shortcomings. While it likely won't make anyone tear up, it is nice to know even one of the greatest basketball stars fails sometimes as a parent.

‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ doesn't take itself too seriously and definitely isn't out to win any awards. However what it does deliver on is classic Looney Tunes humour which is enough to keep the young children engaged through the long runtime. I could've done without the excessive Warner Bros. promotions but I'll let those slide for the simple fact my entire family enjoyed watching it.

Blu-ray Image Quality – Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Brothers Home Entertainment presents you this film ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ in an awesome 1080p image and an equally impressive 1.85:1 2.39:1 aspect ratio for the main part of the film, but we also get to view in some parts of the film are in 1.37:1 and 2.39:1 aspect ratios. There is many a sequence with lovely, rich and vivid colours that really glow and rise up off the screen. This transfer features a good deal of texture and details. The animation holds on quite strong and carries a bold appearance. We get to view some really nice depth of field and some 3 dimensional zest occurs with the film thanks to a lot of CGI animated arenas and sequences. Movements are smooth and natural with no issues regarding any motion jitter or blurring occurring. Blacks are rich and very natural in their appearance. In the animation they do well to outline and contrast. The live action has some really nice shadow work. The film is quite vivid and features lots of pop from any animation or animation type. There is great saturation and filtering that really resonates and glows with this Blu-ray disc. Even just the uniform LeBron James is wearing is quite bold and very striking. Skin tones are very natural and consistent from start to finish of the film. Facial features and textures come through pretty clear as day from any given distance in the frame. All in all this is a definite five star image rating.

Blu-ray Audio Quality – Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Brothers Home Entertainment brings you a brilliant 7.1 Dolby TrueHD experience and it takes every opportunity to impress and fills up the room. There is a good blend of vocals, music and effects that really feel powerful and balanced. Great attention to layering with good depth in the audio mix. There are characters, voices, crowds, music, ships and a more that emanate from the audio channels. And the film keeps it busy as well, with good accuracy. There is a lot of pounding from the subwoofer, with good arcade-like passion and deep tones as bounces, stomps, crashing, crowds and more give you a feel. As busy as the film is, so are the channels. Stuff is moving and coming out of any given place, especially during the games. The sound experience has some good power to it as it rolls and travels around the room. Vocals are always clear and crisp and always part of their environment. Human and animation voices mesh seamlessly, feeling on the same playing field… or on the court. Overall, we get a totally brilliant audio experience and again gets a five star rating from me.

Lee [Director], Sonequa Martin-Green [Kamiyah], Cedric Joe [Dom James], Don Cheedle [Al-G Rhythm], Damian Lillard [Damian Lillard/Chronos], Anthony Davis [Anthony Davis/The Brow], Nneka Ogwumike [Nneka Ogwumike/Arachnneka], Maverick Carter [Producer] and Devin Crane [Co-Animation Supervisor].

Special Feature: Second Quarter: Teamwork [2021] [1080p] [1.851] [7:49] With this special feature, it focuses on the vast array of characters from the Warner Bros. catalogue as well as other cartoon characters. We get a look at the technical challenges in what it took to literally bring hundreds of characters into the film. Contributors include: Malcolm D. Lee [Director], Howard Berger [Make-up Department Head], Devin Crane [Co-Animation Supervisor], Melissa Bruning [Costume Designer], Don Cheadle [Al-G. Rhythm], Kevin Martel [Digital Animation Supervisor], LeBron James [LeBron James/Producer], Anthony Davis [Anthony Davis/The Brow] and Klay Thompson [Klay Thompson/Wet-Fire].

I have to say that on a technical level – this special feature really does excel. Contributors include: Ryan Coogler [Producer], Florian Witzel [Digital Artist Supervisor], Grady Cofer [Visual Effects Supervisor], LeBron James [LeBron James/Producer], Malcolm D. Lee [Director], Kevin Martel [Digital Animation Supervisor], Devin Crane [Co-Animation Supervisor], Marissa Gomes [ILM Visual Effects Producer], Ryan Gillis [Animation Groom Supervisor], Abs Jahromi [CGI Supervisor] and Nneka Ogwumike [Nneka Ogwumike/Arachnneka].

Special Feature: Fourth Quarter: The Looniest [2021] [1080p] [1.85:1] [7:08] Back in 1996 R. Kelly’s sang the song “I Believe I Can Fly” might have been a hit, but I’m sure that Warner Bros. wanted to distance themselves from this thick ignorant moronic brain dead performer these days. At any rate, this one takes a look at the soundtrack for the film and some of the new inspirational songs drawn therein. Contributors include: Maverick Carter [Producer], LeBron James [LeBron James/Producer], Ryan Coogler [Producer], Kris Bowers [Composer], Morgan Rhodes [Music Supervisor], Keir Lehman [Music Supervisor], Malcolm D. Lee [Director], Howard Berger [Make-up Department Head], Sonequa Martin-Green [Kamiyah], Melissa Bruning [Costume Designer], Anthony Davis [Anthony Davis/The Brow], Diana Taurasi [Diana Taurasi/White Mambo] and Ceyair Wright [Darius James].

Special Feature: Deleted Scenes [2021] [1080p] [1.85:1] [7:38] Here we get to view five deleted scenes, and none of them really added anything to the film. Still, if you are interested in checking them out, then you will get to view the following: Next Level, In Cleveland, Timeout, Are You With Us? and No More Secrets. As usual, you can either play each deleted scene separately or Play All.

Finally, ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY’ is a fun, and a very entertaining film at the same time. There is something for just about everyone here, whether it is the action sequences, a decent family message, or seeing favourite Warner Bros. Pictures properties show up for a Looney Tunes adventure. Some critics say about this particular film, might argue that the first ‘Space Jam’ was fine and we didn’t need another one. In many ways it parallels Michael Jordan and LeBron James and you will have to judge for yourself who was the better standout star. As to the film ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY,’ as to this film, and especially for people who never got to view the original ‘Space Jam’ film, this film is a good introduction to a new generation, especially the Looney Tunes characters. Saved by a few imaginative scenes and a welcome return from the Looney Tunes gang, ‘SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY,’ suffers badly from LeBron James's wooden acting ability and of course the saving grace for the film is seeing all the wonderful Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoon characters once again in action. Highly Recommended!
