Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: ‘TOY STORY’ [2011] A little boy named Andy Davis loves to be in his room, playing with his toys, especially his doll named “Woody.” But, what do the toys do when Andy Davis is not with them, they come to life. Woody believes that he has life as a toy. However, he must worry about Andy Davis's family moving, and what Woody does not know is about Andy Davis's birthday party. Woody does not realise that Andy Davis's mother gave him an action figure known as Buzz Lightyear, who does not believe that he is a toy, and quickly becomes Andy Davis's favourite toy. Woody, who is now consumed with jealousy, tries to get rid of Buzz Lightyear. Then, both Woody and Buzz Lightyear are now lost. They must find a way to get back to Andy Davis before he moves without them, but they will have to pass through a ruthless toy killer, Sid Phillips.

Woody: Woody is a vintage cowboy doll who belonged to a boy named Andy Davis. Woody is a loyal toy that has been Andy Davis's favourite toy since kindergarten. Woody is a smart, determined, and passionate man, and would do anything for his nearest and dearest friends.

Buzz Lightyear: Buzz Lightyear is a universal space ranger from the Intergalactic Alliance and is stationed in the Gamma Quadrant of Sector 4. He is the captain of the Alliance’s team. Lightyear is known for his bravery and courage. Buzz believes that following rules are the way people should live their life.

Mr. Potato Head: A potato-shaped toy, his patented design allows him to separate his detachable parts from his body by removing them from the holes on his body. He also has a compartment on his lower back to store extra appendages.

Slinky Dog: Slinky, often referred to as "Slink," is a toy Daschund with a stretchy Slinky as his middle. He's Woody's sidekick and willing to go to great lengths to help his toy friends.

Rex Dinosaur: Rex is an anxiety-riddled, green plastic Tyrannosaurus figure originally belonging to Andy Davis, but now belongs to Bonnie Anderson.

Hamm: Hamm is a wisecracking piggy bank. He and Mr. Potato Head appear to be best friends, as they are often seen playing games and high-fiving each other whenever something spectacular happens.

Bo Peep: Bo Peep is a porcelain shepherdess figurine and Sheriff Woody's girlfriend in the animated films. Bo Peep and her sheep were originally adornments of Molly Davis' bedside lamp.

Andy Davis: Andy Davis is the owner of many of the main toys such as Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Andy Davis lives with his little sister, Molly, and their Mom also known as “Mrs. Davis.” Eventually, Andy grew older and developed other interests, but he still cared about his toys. Andy Davis ultimately gave them away to a girl named Bonnie Anderson, including his favourites, before leaving for college.

Sid Phillips: Sidney “Sid” Phillips is the main antagonist and was Andy Davis's troubled next door neighbour. Unlike his neighbour, he did extremely horrid things to his toys instead of treating them with love and care, until he learned to his horror that the toys were really alive, which gave him such a fright that he vowed to change his ways.

Mrs. Davis: Mrs. Davis who also known as Andy's Mom and Ms. Davis and is a minor character and is the single mother of Andy Davis and Molly Davis. Mrs. Davis is a very loving and devoted parent who establishes fair rules for her children. However, like any parent, she often argues with Andy Davis and Molly Davis.

When ‘TOY STORY’ was first released in 1995, it was totally ground-breaking, and was the first-ever fully computer-animated film and the first released by Walt Disney Pictures / P I X A R Animation Studios, and immediately I was  appreciating the colourful animated toys and also appreciating the sheer wizardry of ‘TOY STORY’ on offer.

‘TOY STORY’ is a buddy movie/adventure tale with an understated lesson about the value of friendship. Parents might also be able to use some of what transpires to encourage their offspring to put away their toys after playtime. I can tell you that ‘TOY STORY’ is capable of holding the attention and there is also quite a bit of intelligent wit that will probably go above the heads of younger viewers, but of course the intelligent wit is of course more aimed at the parents.

The two main characters are toys are cowboy Woody [voice of Tom Hanks], the old-time favourite, and space ranger Buzz Lightyear [voice of Tim Allen], the battery-operated newcomer. The supporting cast includes a skittish Tyrannosaurus Rex [voice of Wallace Shawn], Mr. Potato  Head [voice of Don Rickles], piggy bank Hamm [voice of John Ratzenberger], Slinky Dog [voice of Jim Varney], Little Bo Peep [voice of Annie Potts], and an army of tiny plastic soldiers who scout out the new arrivals on birthdays and Christmas. The humans who appear in ‘TOY STORY’ are intentionally rendered to look artificial. In this movie, people are “unreal” and instead all the vividness and multi-dimensionality is aimed towards toys.

There is plenty of cleverness throughout this ‘TOY STORY’ film and the story keeps moving at a great pace and there is truly never a dull moment in these toys’ lives. This P I X A R release was the first feature film animated entirely by computer. Although the dazzling technology is especially well suited to a story in which the major characters are made out of plastic, and of course the imagination and energy of the people behind the story as well as the outstanding vocal performances that makes the ‘TOY STORY’ movie an instant classic and this is the animated film that first introduced us to the wonderful world of Walt Disney Pictures / P I X A R Animation Studios.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Pictures / P I X A R Animation Studios presents us ‘TOY STORY’ with an excellent 1080p image and of course is shown in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio that still looks incredible. The 3D works extremely well with the toys and their world as it gives them all a sense of depth.  The 3D adds an extra layer of fun to the movie especially during scenes like Woody and Buzz Lightyear’s escape from Sid’s nasty dog Scud where they end up racing through traffic with a lit rocket on their backs.  Both version offer vibrant colours, textures that are finely tuned and the black levels that are dark and inky.  They both look fantastic but while the Blu-ray may be the best overall choice, I think I still prefer the 3D version since it adds an extra bonus of fun to the movie.

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Pictures / P I X A R Animation Studios brings us ‘TOY STORY’ with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience that is just as excellent as the image quality.  Every channel is put to good use with nice clean dialogue coming from the front channels, a lively surround channel, and the rear channels offer a nice immersive experience. There’s some excellent directionality offered that follows the action all around as it skips across the room. The music also sounds terrific and Randy Newman’s songs come across strong and clear and sound really very good.

Finally, ‘TOY STORY’ [2011] is a very clever animated story that was a massive big hit, and justifiably so. It had the terrific ‘TOY STORY’ 2 as well as ‘TOY STORY’ 3 that was a great big hit as well. There are tons of funny lines by the characters voiced by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Jim Varney, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn and John Ratzenberger, among others. ‘TOY STORY’ itself is a total and magical sheer delight to view on the screen. The animation is totally extraordinary in its ability to bring such great entertainment to the screen, especially in 3D. So overall, ‘TOY STORY’ is not only the best Disney / P I X A R film to be released, because it has the best story and the best animation, but especially the excellent voices chosen for all the characters. Very Highly Recommended!
