FILM FACT No.2: A conversation about a sequel to ‘Toy Story’ began around a month after the film's opening in December 1995. A few days after ‘Toy Story’ was released, John Lasseter was traveling with his family and found a young boy clutching a Sheriff Woody doll at an airport. Lasseter described how the boy's excitement to show it to his father touched him deeply. Lasseter realized that his character no longer belonged to him only, but rather it belonged to others, as well. The memory was a defining factor in the production of ‘TOY STORY 2’ with John Lasseter moved to create a great film for that child and for everyone else who loved the characters. John Lasseter said, “The story of ‘TOY STORY 2’ is based a lot on my own experience. I'm a big toy collector and a lot of them are like antiques, or one-of-a-kind toys, or prototypes the toy makers have given me. Well, I have five sons, four of them are little and they love to come to daddy's work, and they come into daddy's office and they just play with everything. And I'm sitting there [saying] “Oh no, that's uh, you can't play with that one, oh no, play with this one, oh no....” and I found myself just sitting there looking at myself and laughing. Because toys are manufactured, put on this Earth, to be played with by a child. That is the core essence of ‘Toy Story.’ And so I started wondering, what was it like from a toy's point of view to be collected?" – John Lasseter, on the story of ‘TOY STORY 2.’

Andrew's 3D Blu-ray Review: With the PIXAR Animation Studios film ‘TOY STORY 2’ [1999] comes up sparkling in a new 3D version, and starts out with a desperate rescue attempt by Woody [Tom Hanks voice] to save a toy friend who's about to be sold at a yard sale, Woody accidentally lands in the hands of a toy collector who takes Woody into his possession. As Buzz Lightyear [Tim Allen voice] forms another rescue team to this time rescue Woody, and Woody meets some new friends from his era and soon is faced with an important decision. Should Woody go back to his loving owner Andy or stay with his new found friends who he fits in with?
Still searching for “the perfect movie?” and you do not think they can make a good wholesome family movie these days? Well, Disney and PIXAR have proven it can be done. Wait no longer, look no further, and hold onto your cowboy hats, because ‘TOY STORY 2’ is the answer to your prayers.
Woody and Buzz Lightyear return, as do all of the original cast from 1995's first ‘Toy Story’ instalment. The computer animation is crisper, smoother, clearer, and cooler. The jokes are funnier, the plot even much more clever, and the characters even more lovable. Despite its ingenious, engaging plot, the creators throw the crowd some extra tasty pop culture jokes with references to ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back.’
It's nice to see each main character getting more screen time and given more of a personality. In the first movie, we saw the vulnerability of Buzz Lightyear and the jealousy of Woody, and with ‘TOY STORY 2,’ we get to see the group more as a team and as friends, which made it more enjoyable as a whole. Also, we're treated to some brand new characters that fit right at home with the gang: Jessie the cowgirl and Bullseye, Woody's trusty steed and all are a great additions to an already stellar team of characters.
With a lot of fun, a pro-friendship message, and a whole new look at old toys and how they “feel” and ‘TOY STORY 2’ pulls at the heartstrings maybe even a little more than the first. In summary, the animated movie is fantastic, and one of the few examples of when a sequel just may top the original. ‘TOY STORY 2’ is good family entertainment and I recommend it to everyone.
Key Characters: Woody: Woody is a loyal toy who has been Andy's favourite toy since kindergarten. Woody is a smart, determined, and passionate man, and would do anything for his nearest and dearest friends.
Buzz Lightyear: Buzz Lightyear is depicted as a Space Ranger working under the authority of the Star Command. Because of his arrival in the original ‘Toy Story’ created conflict with Andy’s favourite toy, Sheriff Woody, though this rivalry would eventually blossom into a lifelong friendship.
Jessie: Jessie is a friendly, excitable cowgirl doll. Jessie likes being loved by any child and has the power to yodel. Jessie hates being in storage – as it makes her claustrophobic.
‘TOY STORY 2’ is a real rare sequel that lives up to its predecessor and they are right about that. It's even better than the first ‘Toy Story’ movie. Very fast-paced and very entertaining, this doesn't have a lot of laugh-out-loud parts but is definitely fun to watch with many good lines. ‘TOY STORY 2’ is a sequel that is just as good as the original - and one that isn't afraid to go to the more emotional side of storytelling.
It is very rare when an excellent movie is followed by an excellent sequel, and ‘TOY STORY 2’ has done just that. The blending of wonderful animation artistry, terrific writing and great voice overs continues thanks to PIXAR. Lots of films claim to be appropriate for all ages and rarely are. I'd recommend this movie to adults and definitely with no children! ‘TOY STORY 2’ is that clever.
‘TOY STORY 2’ is fun for the whole family, as well as fans of PIXAR and a strong performance all round. On top of all that, of course PIXAR has done the impossible, and significantly improved on their original ground breaking film ‘Toy Story.’ Not only is the movie hysterically funny, but every time I thought I knew where the plot was headed something completely new and original was thrown into the mix. One minute I'm laughing hysterically at “Tour Guide” Barbie, the next I'm nearly brought to tears watching a sequence where Emily grows up and leaves Jessie behind. What more can be said? If you think you're too old to enjoy something like this then I feel sorry for you, because this film has more to say about friendship, loss, loyalty and the value of life itself than any of the so-called “grown up” movies I've seen. I rarely do this, but I'm rating this one a definite “five star” rating. As a nice added bonus at the end of the ‘TOY STORY 2’ we get to view some very comical outtakes.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Pictures and PIXAR Animation Studios presents us ‘TOY STORY 2’ with a totally 1080p 3D image that dazzles the senses with an equally wonderful 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The 3D image for this animated movie works even better than it did for the first ‘Toy Story’ movie and it seems as if the movie was conceived with a 3D image in mind. From Buzz Lightyear’s flying through space and asteroids to reach Zurg’s hidden base to the shelves containing Buzz Lightyear toys, this is a fantastic experience. Detail is absolutely amazing here and so sharp that you can read the title of every book on the broken toy shelf. The colours are totally dazzling in their beauty and variety, the black levels are solid, and there’s also excellent contrast as well, and are reference quality and should make anyone extremely happy and hopefully the 3D image will most likely create a lot of new 3D fans. As astounding this image transfer is, it would stand to reason that they couldn’t get any better, but I’m happy to report that by some miracle it does with ‘TOY STORY 2.’
3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Pictures and PIXAR Animation Studios brings us ‘TOY STORY 2’ with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience that definitely has the WOW factor. This powerful audio mix grabs you by the throat as soon as the movie starts and doesn’t let go until it’s over. One of my favourite parts of the movie is the opening sequence and just listening to the titles come onscreen and Buzz Lightyear rocketing through space. With crystal clear dialogue coming from the front channels and an active rear channel that is so powerful and aggressive that it transforms the home theatre into a first class experience. All in all, directionality is also amazing with pin point accuracy that adds complete immersion into the movie. I can’t say enough good things about this demonstration audio worthy mix. Throw away your DVD version of the movie and pick this 3D version as the audio experience is worth the money alone!

Special Feature: ‘TOY STORY 2’ Audio Commentary with John Lasseter, Lee Unkrich, Ash Brannon, and Andrew Stanton [Audio only] [2011] [1080p] [1.78:1] [91:28] With this featurette, we get to hear from Director John Lasseter, Co-directors Lee Unkrich and Ash Brannon, and Co-writer Andrew Stanton and as the ‘TOY STORY 2’ animated movie starts, each person introduces themselves and mention they are here to talk about ‘TOY STORY 2’ and they all welcomes us to this audio commentary and keen to talk about the 1999 animated movie and also informs us that each of them were involved with ‘TOY STORY 2.’ They also say that doing the titles was a lot of fun and was totally inspired the 1978 ‘Superman’ film and especially the cheesy flying logo and the first time use in the animated movie ‘TOY STORY 2’ and they also say they wanted to start ‘TOY STORY 2’ with a real Buzz Lightyear adventure, and they also wanted it to be a homage to the 1997 film ‘Star Troopers’ and they were very happy when Buzz Lightyear starts his journey to where Zurg [Andrew Stanton voice] was with the music of the film ‘2002: A Space Odyssey’ and where Zurg finally destroys Buzz Lightyear, but of course this sequence turns out to be a computer game. They all say they really enjoyed working on ‘TOY STORY 2’ as it brought back all the characters from the animated film ‘Toy Story,’ but most of all, they feel the main story in the animated film is the relationship with Andy and Woody. When we see Woody on the top shelf and causes a lot of dust, they inform us that doing the dust particles was a very difficult technical procedure and after a lot of experimentation, they had to create 2 million tiny particles in the computer. They talk about the dog called Buster and did not want the animal to be just a dog and wanted Buster to have a lot of personality and they praise Steven Clay Hunter who they feel was a great animator and they felt he put so much energy into Buster’s character and personality. When we see Woody with other characters and especially Stinky Pete the Prospector, suddenly we see then watching a black-and-white old TV show and people thought it was recorded from an actual string puppet show and they were very proud that they used a multi-million computer technology in creating the string puppets. Then we see the toys leaving the building and they comment about the leaves on the trees in making them look real, whereas it was not possible to do this with the trees in ‘Toy Story’ because now they have now been able to upgrade their computers. They now talk about the character Al McWhiggin who wants to sell Woody in Japan and they talk about the actor Wayne Knight and they felt he brought so much personality to this character and they also felt Wayne Knight put so much effort into the voice of the character Al McWhiggin and they also felt they were very lucky to have Wayne Knight in the recording studio. At one point in the audio commentary, they talk about the character Jessie and talk about the backstory of her doll that was loved very much and relating how Andy loved Woody, but sadly gets abandoned and they wanted a song to go with that particular sad story and of course they contacted Randy Newman and asked him to come up with a suitable emotional song for that emotional scene we witness and they feel “WHEN SHE LOVED ME” is the best song that Randy Newman had come up with for the Toy Story franchise, and it was also the best recording session with just Randy Newman on the piano and Sarah McLachlan performing the song which was in the recording studio in Vancouver, Canada. They talk about when Tom Hanks was firs called into voice Woody in ‘Toy Story’ and Tom Hanks said to the team, “I hope you are not going to make me sing,” and of course in ‘TOY STORY 2’ they actually got Tom Hanks to sing which we see in that black-and-white scene on the TV screen where we see the string puppet Woody sing and plays a guitar. When we see the group chasing after Al McWhiggin who has a case with Woody in it at San Francisco In International Airport and when the case goes off on the conveyor travellator and suddenly we then suddenly see the massive many different conveyor travellators and they comment that it took 70 hours of computer time to render the animation and they also say it was a very difficult sequence to render and was very difficult to do the layout, staging, but they had a great team to help out with the layout, and by none it was the most difficult sequence for the entire movie and it was so visually and they felt it was like doing a giant 3D jigsaw puzzle. They say that we at PIXAR are big fans of Epilogues that nicely tie up each of the little characters in a nice little bundle, and frankly it is movies we like to see and we also like to see for one last time when you see your characters, and we just love that sort of business. They also love to see Weezee back with the toys, that has a cut little voice, but he can suddenly sing with a big deep opera voice and we got none other than Robert Goulet to do the singing voice and we had so much fun and they wanted Robert Goulet to do a reprise version of the song “You Got A Friend In Me” and to also do it with a big 40 piece brass band orchestra and it was so much fun doing the recording session. They also say it was a test amount to PIXA, to Disney and everyone that represents those names, we had some insurmountable goals and we are very proud of everyone who was involved with ‘TOY STORY 2,’ we are also so proud when we got the go ahead to do ‘TOY STORY 2’ and we have become better filmmakers at PIXAR studio and was prepared to face the challenges the story offered. Finally, as we go through the rest of the audio commentary, they talk in general terms about working on ‘TOY STORY 2’ and talk about their favourite scenes they enjoyed being involved with. They also talk about the transition from the first movie ‘Toy Story’ to this one and the challenges of doing a sequel as well as the technical achievements made since the last movie. They also talk about the story and how important it was to go in a new direction while remaining true to the characters and how they tried to develop them even further. This is a fun and engaging audio commentary track that comes highly recommend.

Special Feature: Celebrating Our Friend Joe Ranft [2010] [1080p / 480i] [1.78:1 / 1.37:1] [12:47] With this featurette, it is a touching tribute to Joe Ranft [1960 – 2005] who started at Disney and was an indispensable part of PIXAR’s success. Joe Ranft was a story man, a gag man, and also provided voices for the movies as well such as Heinrich the caterpillar in ‘A Bug’s Life.’ Joe Ranft’s life was sadly cut short in a car accident whose loss affected the PIXAR Company because John Lasseter says Joe Ranft was “the heart and soul of PIXAR.” We get to also meet a lot of the staff at PIXAR who enjoyed immensely working with Joe Ranft.
