FILM FACT No.2: In 2004, following disagreements between Disney CEO Michael Eisner and PIXAR CEO Steve Jobs, Disney planned to make ‘TOY STORY 3’ at the new studio Circle 7  Animation unit, with the tentative theatrical release date in early 2008. The script was developed in multiple versions; however, after Disney bought PIXAR in early 2006, the Circle 7 version of the film was cancelled as the result of Circle 7's closure. The production was then transferred to PIXAR, where a new script was developed. Randy Newman returned to compose the film's musical score. With a budget of $200 million, ‘TOY STORY 3’ is one of the most expensive films of all time. ‘TOY STORY 3’ premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy on the 12th June, 2010, and was released in the United States on the 18th June 2010. It was the first film to be released theatrically with 7.1 Dolby Surround sound audio. Thus, even the Blu-ray version would feature original 7.1 Dolby Surround sound audio, unlike other films which were remixed into 7.1 for Blu-ray. ‘TOY STORY 3’ was nominated for five awards at the 83rd Academy Awards, winning two, and received numerous other accolades. The sequel, ‘Toy Story 4’ was released in 2019. According to the terms of PIXAR's initial seven-film deal with Disney, all characters created by PIXAR for their films were owned and controlled by Disney. ‘TOY STORY 3’ had its worldwide premiere on the 12th June, 2010, opening at Taormina Film Fest in Italy. In the United States, ‘TOY STORY 3’ premiered on the 13th June, 2010, at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California, USA. The film was theatrically accompanied with the PIXAR short film ‘Day & Night’ which focuses on what happens when an animated personification of Day meets his opposite Night, and the resulting growth for both.

Andrew's Blu-ray Review: With the PIXAR animated film ‘TOY STORY 3’ [2011] and the creators of the beloved Toy Story franchise films re-open the toy box and brings moviegoers back to the delightful world of Woody, Buzz and our favourite gang of the other toy characters in ‘TOY STORY 3’ and Woody and Buzz Lightyear had accepted that their owner Andy would grow up someday, but what happens when that day arrives? In this third instalment, Andy is preparing to depart for college, leaving his loyal toys troubled about their uncertain future. Lee Unkrich (co-director of ‘Toy Story 2’ and ‘Finding Nemo’) directs this highly anticipated film, and Michael Arndt, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ and brings his unique talents and comedic sensibilities to the proceedings.

Andy [John Morris voice] is going off to college, and the toys in his room are all deeply concerned that it’s the end of the road for them. Though Andy does choose to take Woody [Tom Hanks voice] with him on his collegiate journey, the other toys are placed in a bag destined for the attic, but in a tragic misunderstanding, they find themselves first on the street waiting for garbage pick-up and then on their way to Sunnyside, a day care centre which has two playrooms: the Butterfly Room for the older children and the Caterpillar Room for the more rambunctious toddlers. King of the hill at Sunnyside is Lotso [Ned Beatty voice], a plush strawberry-scented bear who rules the roost along with cohorts Big Baby and a Barbie-less Ken doll [Michael Keaton voice]. Lotso has his gullible new influx of toys assigned to the Caterpillar Room where they’re manhandled and abused to within an inch of their lives. It’s then that they realize they’re in effect confined to a prison camp and doing hard labour, at least until Woody, who had earlier left them to return to Andy, can return to try to save them.

With many splendid opportunities for the toys to relate to one another and to the new cast of characters they meet at Sunnyside, the writers have a field day in coming up with a variety of adventures for the lovable playthings. From the riotous opening where Woody, Jessie [Joan Cusack voice], and Buzz Lightyear [Tim Allen] find themselves heroically trying to rescue a train of abducted children (troll dolls) to the hair-raising sequences of escape from one jail only to find the alternatives even more terrifying and deadly, the driving impetus of the film never lets up, all terrifically supervised by director Lee Unkrich. The sheer numbers of toys and children that these animators are dealing with throughout the movie are simply staggering, and the animation has achieved now such a degree of sophistication that special moments such as when Buzz Lightyear gets switched to Spanish mode (with hilarious flamenco poses) or the gang faces imminent death in alternately a garbage compactor, chopper, and an incinerator.

Most of the familiar voices from previous films are back Rex [Wallace Shawn voice], Hamm [John Ratzenberger], Barbie [Jodi Benson voice] along with stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack, and doing their usual sterling jobs with the hilarious Mr. Potato Head [Don Rickles voice] and Mrs. Potato Head [Estelle Harris voice] being given more screen time in this movie than in the past. Of the new characters, the standouts are, of course, new villain Lotso with a smarmy, sadistic glee and the hilariously vain but also frighteningly viperous Ken.

‘TOY STORY 3’ is a triumph of animation and imagination, and what we get here is a fitting tribute to an amazing Toy Story film franchise series that just continues to surprise again and again with each new entry. It's just a great reminder for all of us heartless adults of better days in our youth that have long gone bye-bye.

Key Characters: Woody: Woody is a vintage cowboy doll who belonged to a boy named Andy Davis. Woody is a loyal toy that has been Andy's favourite toy since kindergarten. Woody is a smart, determined, and passionate man, and would do anything for his nearest and dearest friends.

Buzz Lightyear: Buzz Lightyear is a universal space ranger from the Intergalactic Alliance and is stationed in the Gamma Quadrant of Sector 4. He is the captain of the Alliance’s team. Lightyear is known for his bravery and courage. Buzz believes that following rules are the way people should live their life.

Jessie: Jessie is a friendly, excitable cowgirl doll. Jessie likes being loved by any child and has the power to yodel. Jessie hates being in storage – as it makes her claustrophobic.

‘TOY STORY 3’ is a wonderful and touching animation for all the family. This magnificent tale of loyalty and friendship is fantastic and recommended for the whole family and it is a worth entertainment. ‘TOY STORY 3’ in my opinion is by far the best of the trilogy. It is the most emotionally investing out of all the Toy Story franchise and is an outstanding entry into the PIXAR entertainment, because the animation and the animation moves of the characters are simply perfect. Ken and Barbie, they're robotic moves are so breath-taking. The moves are simply so detail and mesmerizing. Overall, I give this movie a perfect score of five stars and I look forward to viewing and doing a review of the 3D Blu-ray of ‘Toy Story 4.’

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Pictures and PIXAR Animation Studios presents us ‘TOY STORY 3’ with a totally wonderful 1080p 3D image and again it is shown in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio and like the ‘Toy Story 2’ 3D Blu-ray, this is also a stunning looking Blu-ray and this one again achieves an unprecedented level of an awesome 3D image, because ‘TOY STORY 3’ was originally created for 3D, this movie takes advantage of the added dimensionality which makes the world look even more realistic and obtainable and ‘TOY STORY 3’ is the only animated movie in the Toy Story trilogy that was actually released theatrically in 3D. The streets seem to go on forever, the Sunnyside Daycare feels like a whole new world, and the danger is even more intense during the final scene with the incinerator. On top of all that, the image transfer is impeccable; with colour details are totally vivid in every instance, and totally phenomenal and amazing. The colours are vivid and pop in every instance, detail is beyond phenomenal, and as rich as the colours are, and the black levels are just as amazing. And if you invite people round to view this 3D Blu-ray, then you should make this your new demonstration disc to show off just how good s 3D Blu-ray discs can look and Disney just keeps getting better and better with each release. This is now my new 3D demo disc to show off just how good a 3D Blu-ray can look.

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Pictures and PIXAR Animation Studios brings us ‘TOY STORY 3’ with an awesome 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience that is astoundingly good!  Every channel is used to the maximum extent and it’s done so well that you will feel like you are there.  From the opening sequence’s train chase with a bridge blowing up to the end of the movie’s city dump’s roaring furnace, your sub-woofer will be rocking your house! Wat is equally exciting, was the use of the surround channels as toys flew all over the place which almost made feel like ducking. Dialogue is crystal clear and there is also a nice option of the audio descriptive audio track to allow vision impaired people a chance to enjoy the movie as well.

Highly Recommended!
