Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: The original ‘TRON’ film was a showcase of the latest CGI technologies in animation, film compositing and computer based effects. For the ‘TRON’ franchise returns nearly 30 years later, ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” continues this visually innovative tradition. Visually, ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D’ stands alongside the film ‘AVATAR’ as the best 3D experience money can buy.

When the film ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” was finally released in cinemas in December 2010, 28 years after the original cult film premiered, it faced a wave of anticipation and expectation not seen since the last Indiana Jones film. And just like that long-delayed instalment, this particular film to some people didn't quite live up to the hype for many die-hard fans, but for me ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” turns out to be just as good as the original ‘TRON’ film and also over time this has also become a big cult film with the original ‘TRON’ film, as the two films really compensate for each other.

The story catches up with Kevin Flynn's grown up son Samuel "Sam" Flynn [Garrett Hedlund], who is still dealing with his father's disappearance, in 1989, when he was just four years old. After a mysterious text message leads him back to the old Kevin Flynn's Arcade, where Samuel "Sam" Flynn suddenly finds himself drawn into “The Grid,” the ultimate digital world that is much more advanced than the one his father Kevin Flynn visited in the first film. This time, though, it's a world entirely of Kevin Flynn's creation, now run by his renegade computer counterpart, CLU [Codified Likeness Utility], which is an upgraded version of the computer program seen at the beginning of ‘TRON’ film. Also among the cast are Bruce Boxleitner, returning as Alan Bradley and the voice of TRON, Olivia Wilde as a computer programmer called Quorra played by Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen as Castor, the proprietor of the End of Line club inside “The Grid.”

Fortunately, Samuel "Sam" Flynn gets some help from a curvaceous warrior called Quorra, who reunites him with his long-lost father. The three of them join forces to return back to the real world, but face many hurdles, not least the wrath of the megalomaniacal CLU, a younger-looking version of Kevin Flynn and also played by a digitally-enhanced Jeff Bridges who also wishes to hack his way into “real life” in order to cause mayhem there also.

First-time director Joseph Kosinski uses his architectural training to good effect in angle poising the action. The first half hour of the film, before it shifts into “Real 3D” mode, is so very well paced, totally dynamic and equally awesome. But with his debut feature, director Joseph Kosinski shows he has a strong eye for style and choreographing wide vistas of dramatic action. The film has sequences that is not only the most exciting scenes in the film but also provides a handy point of comparison to the original ‘TRON’ film and how far the digital effects have come in the intervening years. In the first ‘TRON’ film, the race was an almost entirely geometric affair, with the motorcycles traveling as if on a child's Etch-A-Sketch board and crashing into opponents and it truly did feel like little more than a one-dimensional video game with no environmental component. But with the film ‘TRON LEGACY’ it has some light-hearted enjoyment and then suddenly swings wildly into inserting emotional beats, character development, to the point of inserting lots of high calibre digital explosion.

By contrast, you get the compelling design elements are a hallmark of the ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” film, and especially illuminated by the Philip Johnson-style glass enclosures hang dramatically against nocturnal backdrops, while uniforms and aerodynamically designed motorcycles are strikingly defined by their lights and colours, especially the bright orange and red for the grid-based programs, blue and white for the outsiders. The streaks of light, combined with three-dimensional twists and turns by the rocketing bikes, the eye-widening way “programs” disintegrate upon impact and the awesome power of the techno music film score by Daft Punk create a novel and fully realized action set piece.

But what is actually cool and always very welcome in the film ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” is the film music score. Which is composed by the brilliant French electronic music duo Daft Punk, the music pulses with deep bass and skilfully utilizes tempos that range from the solemn with “Adagio for TRON” and to the triumphant “Flynn Lives” to the awesome pulse-pounding “Derezzed.” It is a music film score that works so well on all levels and on its own. But when Daft Punk decides to crank up the music, your subwoofer will go crazy. There is so much bass that you can almost see the air vibrating with every turn, and the sustained thrum really creates a level of immersion that's unusual in film soundtracks.

The original 1982 ‘TRON’ was to some a very strange film, but not to me, I loved it, especially it was also visually inventive, unique and utterly prescient. Its man-trapped-inside-computer scenario coming right on the cusp of the nascent videogame revolution. This sequel ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” takes the original star, Jeff Bridges. Then, through some cutting edge digital sculpting allows him to play ‘opposite’ his younger self from the original Sci-Fi film. Whatever, there are flashes of brilliance that transform ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” into an amazing great cinematic experience. It also has an exquisite colour palette, all manner of brilliant “Real 3D” thrills abound, an equally quite brilliant Daft Punk film music score and a nicely engineered love story. They all combine to create an immersive technological future world that we all wish we could enter for real. But of course ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” is well worth connecting with and you will not be at all disappointed.

3D Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Home Entertainment has once again brought you this ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” Blu-ray disc in a stunning 1080p image presentation and to preserve the original IMAX theatrical viewing experience, the picture image will alternate between 2.35:1 and 1.78:1 aspect ratios. The black matte bars on your screen will adjust accordingly and if you have got the capability to watch ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D,” then I highly recommend it. This is definitely image reference quality, and the 3D Blu-ray disc you should immediately put into your Blu-ray player to show off this film on your big 3D Television set to really annoy your jealous friends. If you have got a big enough TV screen and a dark enough room, the 3D effect works even better on your 3D TV than it does in the cinema. Despite the fact that you still have the business of putting on your special 3D glasses to watch the film, but in this case it just totally justified and worth it. Even in 2D dimensions, the picture's depth of field and definition are totally spectacular. The use of colour in the film is so precise, stylish, with flashes of blue, red and yellow separating the good guys from the bad. The palette of the real world outside of the grid is more naturalistic and draws you in with reflective surfaces of gleaming chrome and steel. At the start of the film they mention that some scenes were filmed in 2D, and they inform us to still keep your 3D glasses on.

3D Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Home Entertainment gives you TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” Blu-ray disc in a stunning audio experience, especially with all you fanatical audiophiles will really appreciate the 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio channels of sound, especially the driving electronic score by Daft Punk. You will feel like you are on the game grid with Sam Flynn as discs come whizzing past your head and light cycles zoom from one end of the system to the other. The thumping bass packs a punch, but there's plenty of zest in the top end as well. Dialogue gets the least amount of emphasis, though it doesn't get overwhelmed by the other elements, for the most part. This is true state of the art sound that will blow you away.

Now, ‘TRON’ has become a franchise we have not stopped hearing since that a third film will be born and an animated series is in future preparation. To me personally, I thought this was a completely stupid idiotic waste of time and effort, and was wondering who or what initiated this load of garbage that should have been left on the cutting room floor. Finally, with the film ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” in the end, for those who are looking for a great 3D Blu-ray viewing experience, will really appreciate this film very much. The CGI computer generated visuals are totally stunning, especially the colours, clarity and depth of field are equally outstanding and impressive, and the film itself is generally and definitely worthy of a look and a great companion to the original ‘TRON’ film, if sadly was slightly less than successful successor to the original film, but at least the saving grace for this film is the awesome 3D presentation that will simply blow you away. But very importantly, and again it was never going to win any screenplay awards, or be anything more than an effects laden popcorn flick; but as visual spectacles go, it doesn’t get any better than ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” and it is a brilliant fitting sequel that succeeds on every level of it is intended viewers enjoyment. But most importantly it will be a great 3D Blu-ray disc to use to show off on any home cinema system, and is a totally enjoyable watch, and with awesome sets, stages, extra special effects, and a fictional world that is grand and full of spectacle in scale, and makes the film ‘TRON LEGACY’ “Real 3D” is pure eye popping extravaganza from start to finish. Highly Recommended!
