Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: In the animated ‘WISH’ [2023] we are informed, that once upon a time, there was a young man who believed there was nothing more important than a wish. Not just a wish of course, the one that drives your heart. The one that makes you who you are . . . . . . .
But he also understood just how impossible it can be to make that wish come true . . . . . . . . . .
How easily dreams can be destroyed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
And so he set out to do something about it . . . . . . .
He studied magic of the world tirelessly, and became a mighty sorcerer, able to protect from harm or ill will, any wish given to him. And, for the good and the worthy, even grant that wish . . . . . . . .
The sorcerer didn’t know if the world would want his gift. But he and his loyal wife found the most perfect island deep in the Mediterranean Sea.
And there they built a Kingdom like no other, where anyone, any family, no matter where they came from, were welcome.
In this Disney animated musical-comedy ‘WISH,’ Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose), who is a sharp-witted idealist in the kingdom of Rosas, makes a powerful wish that’s answered by Star, a ball of boundless energy. Soon, Asha and Star must face a formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas — to save her community and prove that when one brave human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things happen, and here is a more in-depth look at the characters in the animated film ‘WISH’ and they are as follows:
ASHA: She’s driven to do what is right for Rosas, which really kicks in when she learns the king’s real plans for most of the wishes in his possession.
KING MAGNIFICO: He's the most powerful person in the kingdom of Rosas, where wishes really do come true. People come from everywhere to give their wishes to King Magnifico.
VALENTINO: Is a confident and opinionated goat that follows Asha wherever she goes.
STAR: It's a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy that inspires people to pursue their deepest wishes.
The animated film ‘WISH’ is co-written by Jennifer Lee, and follows the story of 17-year-old Asha who lives in a land where residents share their greatest wish with King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine) in the hope it will come true. However, over the course of an hour and a half, Asha realises she must save her kingdom from the king's sinister purpose of wish gathering and granting.
The animated film ‘WISH’ is set in the magic kingdom of Rosas, a tropical island whose residents lead a life of utopian serenity, though for a reason that’s rather suspect: Every one of them has a wish — the thing they’d want most in the world — but they’ve given their wishes to King Magnifico, the devilishly handsome, outwardly benevolent sorcerer who rules the island, and apparently rules their dreams as well.
A twig with a point of light on it becomes Asha’s magic wand. And all of this will give her what she needs to take on King Magnifico, who becomes a light show all his own when he digs into his book of black magic, which gives him extraordinary power. The animated movie turns into Asha and her cute angelic Star vs. King Magnifico and his green phosphorescent demonic light, with the fate of the island residents — and their wishes — hanging in the balance.
The film’s 17-year-old heroine, Asha is a spunky, sharp-tongued idealist who learned, from her late father, that a wish is something you make upon a star, and then carry around with you. It’s the deepest part of who you are. Asha has applied to be the emperor’s new apprentice, and when she arrives for her interview with King Magnifico, who’s a coiffed goateed smoothie, she wants to impress him. But Asha can’t help but question how the whole “Your wish is mine until I decide to give it back to you” thing works. Her bold stance ticks off King Magnifico, revealing his true nature. He’s a kind leader until his authority is questioned, at which point his inner authoritarian comes out. We’re talking a ruthless corporate overlord crossed with Maleficent, as well as the first Disney villain who looks like he uses serious hair product.
Out on her own, Asha, inspired by her father, makes a wish so powerful that it lights up the night sky and makes every citizen of Rosas glow with warmth. The wish arrives. It is…a star! A glowing yellow one, who darts around like Tinkerbell crossed with a cuddly emoji, throwing off fairy dust and talking in high-pitched cuddly coos. The star’s name is… Star. And though he/she looks like something that could be hanging on a mobile over a baby’s crib, Star’s magic is real. With one quick gesture, all the local animals start talking — one of them, Asha’s three-week-old pet goat, Valentino (voiced by Alan Tudyk), in droll Disney-sidekick absurdities.
In the vein of most classic Disney films, ‘WISH’ transports us to an enchanted kingdom. This one is Rosas, a prosperous city in the Mediterranean ruled by King Magnifico who is no ordinary king. Aside from his star-patterned cloak and a glorious head of salt and pepper hair, King Magnifico is a powerful sorcerer who is able to grant anyone's deepest desire. However, like with all magic, this wish-granting comes with a catch.
With her headstrong idealism and genuine care for everyone around her, Asha makes for a wonderful addition to the Disney princess canon. The strategy behind the animated film ‘WISH’ seems to be: If we do homage to enchantment, the audience will be enchanted. True magic, however, it can’t be recycled.
Of course, from the moment the first cartoon princess in 1937 debuted on our screens, Disney knew it had created a winning formula, and almost 100 years later these timeless tales and enchanting characters still captivate the minds of the audience.
The animated film ‘WISH’ has been released in the year Disney celebrates its centenary. In October 1923, Walt Disney and his brother Roy Disney officially founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio.
In a nod to Disney's past and present, ‘WISH’ combines modern-day 3D computer animation with Disney's older watercolour animation. The latter is mostly used in background art, bringing lush forests and soaring castle rooms to life. 3D animation comes into play more for character art, as well as the luminescent bubbles that hold everyone's wishes.
Here is a point of interest, “When You Wish Upon a Star” is one of those songs, like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” that’s bigger than a song. It was first heard, of course, in the 1940 Walt Disney animated classic ‘Pinocchio,’ where it was sung by Jiminy Cricket. Disney made it the company theme song in the ’50s, and since the early 1980’s it has been featured in the studio’s motion-picture logo. “When You Wish Upon a Star” is more than an anthem — it’s a totem of corporate magic, a statement of everything the company represents and holds so dear to our hearts.

Blu-ray Image Quality – Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios present us this amazing animated film ‘WISH’ and truly has a 1080p sparkle and of course it is presented in the 2.55:1 aspect ratio which of course is in a very widescreen aspect ratio, so yes, your black bars are bigger than normal. The overall picture quality is on par with the best animated presentations on the Blu-ray format, with bright colours and deep blacks. Gorgeous through and through and the HDR Highlights are blindingly bright at times. Animation can sometimes be a mixed bag with foreground and background, but Wish is faithful to the digital source. The charm of the film and animation is that it carries an old school feel that is very pleasing to the eye. Crowds and interiors are drawn with a lot of thought going into how they’ll look in and out of focus. Everything looks like singular perfection to my eyes! Colours come alive throughout the animated film, and the colours tend to lean towards cool blues and bright greens and they look fabulous on this Blu-ray disc. Overall, it is a wonderful clean image.
Blu-ray Audio Quality – Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios brings us this amazing animated film ‘WISH’ with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio experience. Surround channels also highlight what the height channels do, but they don’t move around the room as much as the heights do. They stay in their place and they deliver exactly how they should sound, which is another shining highlight of this a great audio mix. The dialogue reproduction gives us a really excellent dialogue performance throughout the animated film ‘WISH.’ On top of all that, the bass notes helps lift the songs, giving them weight and bounce. It’s not particularly special or notable, but a mild accentuation.
